Compression problems, PLEASE help...

I am new to digital video and have some problems. I recently bought a Panasonic DV camera and all is working fine. Except this LITE version of MovieMax program that wont get me to set the DivX 4 (or any other codec) bit rate. Whenever i drag the pointer, say, from 900 to 5000 bits, and come back to the same menu to check it, the bit rate is set to its default value (900). All other programs like MovieMaker (to hard) and Virtual Dub are working fine.
I suppose this is some kind of a bug as there is no worning of unauthorised use.
So, if anyone had similiar problem, please share.
But more importantly, could you recommend me a good freeware program to mix raw DV AVI (and convert it to DivX off course) video with MP3 sound, as Virtual Dub only uses WAV sound.
Please help, as I am going slightly mad here.
