When will Blu-ray kill DVD ?

Is it a matter of months or years ? I have heard that some companies will stop releasing titles on DVD--really soon. Thats interesting as only about 1% of our population has a Blu Ray player...won't that be a loss ?
Probably a rumour but it is ecually interesting to hear your opinions on the matter when Blu-ray will kill DVD off...as DVD killed VHS.
Will my DVD movies and backups play on a Blu-Ray player etc etc

Maybe never.

There are millions of DVD players around the world. They will be around for a long time yet. VHS was around for 20 years and DVD is only half that atm. Even after the hardware has finished being made. The discs will still very likelyt be made. There is too much money invested in it.

Both HD DVD and Blu Ray are backward compatible with DVD. They only got launched in the UK this month and most people haven't even heard of the two formats. Many people won't have the need for it as DVD is sufficient plus, not many people have things like HDTV's in the UK. HDTV's have only got popular in the last six months with cheap LCD TV's.

I will not even look into HD for at least three years until the hardware comes down in price.

What should be asked is what will replace the disc media.

Memory stick.

Once those things hit 40Gb and up, say goodbye to the disc. Movie, music, data, perhaps when they reach 100Gb and more, say goodbye to the hard disk.

Solid state is the future (Star Trek showed the way 40 years ago). However, I will be interested in what happens to Holographic Versatile Disc.

HD, Blu-Ray, Memory Stick, etc. All that stuff is cool, but I for one am getting tired of the continual upgrade/switch to different formats, etc. And what is coming down the line after the memory stick? And after that?!?

It is all "a race to zero" IMO. Maybe what I am trying to say is that I tire of spending my hard earned $$$ on items only to be told that my 6 mo. old componant is now obsolete!

You don't have to switch formats. I have been watching DVD for nearly 9 years now and I will be still watching it in many years (I have to when I have over 1500 of them).

I probably be skipping HD DVD/Blu Ray and see what HVD does.

I was at the Sony store a while back, and they had a blu-ray disc in their demo PC, so I thought I'd take a look and opened the drive in My Computer... and it had like 3 video folders! All of which seemed empty, unless the files are hidden or something.

So, do I but, I won't for several years. I don't even have a display that does HD (we are well behind in the UK). HD DVD only got officially released this month.

I must admit to thinking of changing players. Everything here is set up for 1920 x 1080 (well, almost everything, except for a few TVs - cetainly in the home cinema).

The HD DVD cracking is evolving at an enormous pace. New apps are being written and even key databases are being contemplated.

As I said above, I think this will actually help HDDVD over BR, and if it does, that will show just how bizarre copy protection is. But, let us see.

i'll be making the switch the minute HD-DVD drives for PC become affordable... i'll bet by then decrypting them will be easy enough
