velazqueztr, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the consumer sd dvd viewing market.
Do you have any idea of the number of press releases over the years on protection methods? hundreds.
There are something like 600 million Dvd reading devices already in consumer hands world wide. The average consumer who buys and rents dvd's has several. The reading device costs about $20.
In my household we have three PCs and a laptop. they have net five readers. We have three stand alone playrs not including two game consoles, net five more. We have two portables for use in vehicles. . My wife and I have dvd drives in our work pcs at work as well. That is 14 devices
There is a sd dvd standard. they all comply. to add an rfid reader would change the standard and require all readers to be sent to makers to be physically modified. Cost would be about $50 per unit. for most units modification is impossible. This would mean someone other than the consumer wold have to pay the $200 to $300 billion or so dollars just to modify and replace the players on the market and all those expected to be sold in the next couple of years. That cost is before the presumed royalties to ritek unless they are going to implement this for free and go out of business themselves.
You posted a four month old story based solely on a press release. This has already been clarified to be targeted toward solely helping retail chains and distributors avoid buying say 10,000 pirate copies.
the ship has already sailed on hd and bluray dvd also.Comment
