    horizontal bands on playback

    HI
I reveiwed my footage and discovered horizontal bands on the playback. What has caused these and is there any software I can use to remove them. I cleaned the heads of the camcorder and changed tapes - so I don't know if I had a faulty tape or the heads were dirty. The tape in question was a new unused tape.

    Any comments gratefully received

    Welcome to the forum

They're interlacing artefacts-- whether to deinterlace or not depends on what you wish to do with the footage. For PC playback, deinterlacing is preferred; for DVD output, leave it interlaced.

Thank you, but I don't understand your answer. The bands are within a video clip, not between clips - it is very reminiscent of poor tracking in hte olden days.

Read up on interlacing here and here. Are you planning on keeping the video on a PC or burning to DVD?

          HI
The bands are a lot thicker than this - it is as if there is a fault on the tape. It has not occurered on other tapes purchased in hte same batch. I am hoping to burn hte video to DVD.
Just going to read the links enclosed.

          Many thanks

How did you capture the video? Was the source analogue or digital? Post a screenshot (play the file with Media Player Classic, use File-->Save Image).

I have saved an image thus - the film was caught in digital mode (using a mini DV tape - the banding is visible on the tape, directly from the camcorder, so I know it's not created by the transfer to my PC). I think I realise that I may not be able to recover the footage, but I would like to know what caused it and how to avoid it in future.

Those are definitely not interlacing artefacts. Depending on whether the problem is constant throughout (at least most of) the video, you may be able to recover it with Avisynth with some effort.

but I would like to know what caused it and how to avoid it in future.
My guess is a faulty tape.

Many thanks for your help and advice here. Being new to videography - how much of a problem are faulty tapes - what kind of incidence do they ocurr? I stick to the same brand, which I believe to be a good quality - one of the big name brands.
