virtual dub users - need help!

i run into alot of those VBR warnings when loading an avi "AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is non-standard and you may encourter sync errors up to 8662ms when attempting to extract WAV files or processing the audio in Direct Stream Copy mode. Full processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress the audio. (bitrate: 131.6 + 21.6 kbps)"

now i usually have to join cd1 cd2 movie clips and when i load cd1 for example and get that VBR warning. do i leave video on direct stream and recompress the audio to any bitrate like say, Lame MP3, 128kbps, then save avi? and do the same to cd2? also, how long does it usually take?

Yes,do that for both and join. The audio recompression takes only a few minutes. You can also ignore the warning and see what happens. If there is no A-V sync problem then there is no need to recompress. Also try out AVIMuxGUI for joining avi files.

It is debatable whether it is a hack or not, but the general consensus is that it is. IIRC I even came across a post by Alexander Noe (the author of Avi-Mux GUI) stating VBR audio in AVI is not spec compliant

        Edit: Interesting link

Thanks Anon for pitching in. I was just waiting for you.Did you personally encounter any problem with VBR audio in AVI( regarding playback in standalones)?
And yes, very interesting and informative(although a lot of it went above my head) !

I rarely work with AVI anymore (mostly Matroska and MPEG TS) but when I did, I didn't encounter any issues with VBR audio. I am pretty sure that VBR MP3 support is one of the requirements for a player to be labeled "Divx Certified" though.

From reading your other thread, I'm thinking it's a burning issue. Not really my forte, but update firmware, use good media, use ImgBurn and burn at a lower speed. Take a look around the Blank Media & Burning forum, and Blutach's signature.

Thanks Anon for the info.Do you think there will be standalone support for mkv in near future? I went to this page and it looks promising, to say the least.

                  now that you mention it...
i burnt those others at higher speed. the last couple i burnt at 2x and 4x. maybe it was that. i'll try again with avi mux and burn at low speed. let ya know what happens.

I hope so. As far as I'm concerned mkv already has standalone support in the form of HTPCs-- all my DVDs are backed up as x264 + ac3/dts + chapters/subs in mkv.

The logical choice really, AVI needs hacks to get it all in there, MP4 will not hold ac3/dts unless as private streams, and MPEG TS/PS, while able to do the job, don't have the best muxing tools, meaning little flexibility.
