Can anyone figure this one out? Some films on video, laser and DVD on Region 1 run longer than sone films on Region 2 even though the Region 1 versions have no extra footage for a film. I'm not talking about the amount of bonus materials on top because I know different Regions have more bonus materials, less bonus materials and sometimes, no bonus materials. I'm talking about the films alone. JAWS on Region 1 lasts four minutes longer than the Region 2 version and both versions have the same amount of footage. I know that like the back of my hand because I grew up with JAWS so I know if it's cut or uncut and it's uncut on DVD on Region 1 and Region 2. I can take JAWS apart and put it back together without the screenplay. Other films made by Universal are the same. EARTHQUAKE has an extra ten minutes as the Region 1 version and it's the same version as the Region 2 version. (I wish Universal would release the Threatrical Version of EARTHQUAKE because that's never been for sale to the public and that version has an extra 20 minutes). I have a rare copy on VHS that I recorded from ITV over ten years ago but it's not wide screen, though.
Anyway, I've found out that other films on Region 1 last longer than the Region 2 versions even though the Region 1 versions have no extra footage in them. This is something to do with the Region playback but the other strange thing is, it doesn't effect all films compared from Region 1 to Region 2. I must say, I know there are different playback methods. I don't know the names, however, some lasers don't have a normal counter, they have a very fast-moving one but that doesn't always apply to all the titles that this issue involves. There are many more titles in the same fashion such as DIE HARD but I can't mention them all even though other titles were made by other studios such as JAWS and EARTHQUAKE were made by Universal and DIE HARD was made by Fox.
By the way, I know Region 1 tapes, lasers and DVD move faster than Region 2. That isn't a reason because I first noticed this with a copy of JAWS on Region 1 years ago and it lasted four minutes longer than the Region 2 version and both copies were all on one tape in one part and the same with JAWS on DVD where the film is all on one disc with the film itself. Films over 2 hours on Region 1 are split onto two tapes. With a four-hour video tape on Region 2, it becomes a two-hour tape on Region 1. DVD must have a different method because with SP on Region 2 with DVD recorders, a DVD disc is 2 hours. If things work out the way it must be for a downfall then Region 1 has the DVD discs as a 1-hour disc for DVD recorders in America and Canada. I hope not because not all DVD recorders record LP with decent picture quality. Luckily for me, my Sony DVD recorder can record LP recordings as good as SP recordings. Sharp are useless. Their LP recordings makes DVDs look like VHS on SP.
Encase anyone reads this and replies, please try to explain my point from the start about some Region 1 films running longer than Region 2 films even though they both have the same amount of footage. That was my main reason for this post even though I got carried away later here. Lol.
Many thanks.
Darren.
