AVI's have stopped working!

Hi guys,
i'm really really stuck and hoping that someone can help me.
For some reason within the last 2 weeks i have lost the ability to play, convert or encode any AVI files!
i have tried everything i can think of and most of what i can find on-line.
GSpot image results are attached. as you can see it won't even recognise it as a valid file. I have played all of these files before, so i know they are not corrupt.
The only sugestion i have received so far is to re-format my hard drive. As you can imagine, this is not a course i would like to follow.

Please please can someone help.

you may have overdosed on codecs, I only have 192 installed and that's too much

what codec packages did you install?

The only extra ones i have added recently are AC3, DivX adn VLC.
But i have since uninstalled all of these now to see if it helps.

Try to get info about the file with Mediainfo.
