Progressive Scan DVD player or Upscale player

Hi, I'm new at this digital stuff so I hope I'm asking the right things for this subject. I know this question has probably been asked a thousand times. I did try the searching but could'nt find what I was looking for.
I just bought a Sony 40v3000 1080p LCD HDTV. I would like to know if I need a Progressive Scan player or an Upscaler player to get the best picture from my dvd's.
With a progressive scan player will I be getting 480p or more? I guess I'm asking which one will give me the best picture on this HD set.
I have heard and read that my tv will automatically upscale with a progressive scan player. Is that correct?
    Thank's for any help.

right now the best option might be to get a good progressive scan player with upconverting/not upscalar capability and hdmi output, in the next year we should see dramatic improvements in price and capabilites of true upscalars(I found a high end upscalar for 2000$) didn't even play dvd's

your tv has upconverting built into it?

hopefully admin will come along soon

Thank's Chewy. Yes, I was told when I bought the set that it has an upconverter in it. Do all progressive scan players have upconvertion? Does upconvertion take it to 480p or 1080p?
        Thank's again.

you need hdmi output for upconverting, they claim to go to 720 and 1080, but remember
this is partly smoke and mirrors, upscalars do a lot better job, as true hd players drop in price they will be a better option

The player that Chewy linked is pretty good, good brand, has all the usual features (eg. DivX playback). This one from Philips also has DivX Ultra support (DivX with menus, subtitles ...), and is a bit cheaper, but I don't know if it's better than the Panasonic or not:

There are also some more expensive upscaling DVD players (eg. from OPPO), but I don't think it's worth investing in one of these, not when HD DVD players can be had for only a little bit more than these players (sometimes cheaper as well).

Thank's for the info. HD and Blu Ray are fighting for the top spot, sort of like Beta and VHS years ago. I know that Block Buster here only rents Blue Ray because of the game players being Blue Ray. Hope they get that all sorted out so we can pick one or the other.
                  Thank's again.

Dual-format players are the way to go, but they are too expensive right now. Not looking at the price, then the new Samsung dual-format player is quite good, and includes excellent DVD upscaling. I would be tempted to buy one if it drops to $US 400, because that's the price I paid for my DVD upscaling player about 2 or 3 years ago.
