Hmmm... installing ImgBurn it asked if it could replace another program as the burning program. That other program... another famous but now unmentionable one, has not worked right since I've gotten the new PC.

Getting there. I'd still like to be able to use that DVDS program since I like its editing capabilities and its quality compression. I'll have to check to see if it's making readable files. I can't remember how I made the one that was on my HD.

with imgburn in write mode and a blank in, the right hand screen should show burn speeds and mid code and drive firmware, I would stick with 8 or 12x for those sony's and a newer liteon drive

under tools there's a filter drive load order that will show any sonic filter

use imgburn to remove it, if any if you decide to uninstall sonic

Problem Solved! It appears there's an incompatibility problem with Nero 8 Burning ROM and the shell program DVDS that depends on it. I had to go back to Nero7... but a new version that was compatible with Vista. Thanks all for trying to figure this one out!
