    Playback and Recording Weirdness!

    Hi Guys,

I have a question about dvd recording. I have noticed that when recording in widescreen on my sony dvd recorder along the bottom of the screen and along the top (when i say screen i mean the edge of the moving picture before the black bands at the top and bottom i get a weird sort of 'jagged' mark that is always there when i watch it back that can also be seen when recording as well.

It is really hard to explain but there is just 1 on the top edge of the moving picture and one on the bottom. The best way to describe it is if you take the top edge of the moving picture or the bottom and you look from one side to the other of the screen along the top or bottom about half way across there is a sort of small 'step.'

I have done what i can below with the keyboard options available to me to kind of represent what it is like imagine the dotted lines and straight line are the same it is just i couldnt do it any other way. Imagine they both represent the edge of the picture on the top or bottom of the actual moving screen part of a widescreen picture. The height of the 'step' is not as large as the dashes represents but shows kind of what it looks like if you think of the very edge of the moving picture at the top or the bottom as this dotted and solid line line. Hope someone knows what i am taking about, is this normal?

if i watch it back on my 4:3 TV, 16:10 widescreen PC monitor, or 16:9 widescreen TV it is the same......

as i said imagine looking at one side of the screen and then run your eyes across the moving picture either on the top or bottom of the edge of the moving picture and then about halfway along there is a small 'step' in the picture on the edge of the picture it happens with my sky box and my freeview when i play it through the dvd recorder, it is virtually impossible to find a word to describe this and i have tried taking a screenshot but it doesn't come out so you can see it....

Yes. It sounds like interlace artifacts. Try to open your video in Media Player Classic and use a deinterlace filter. If it does not help, then they are surely interlace artifacts.

well these are dvd recordings of a TV programmes in widescreen from my built in freeview in my sony dvd recorder also when i record from my SKY box in widescreen through the dvd recorder i have the same problem, when i record in 4:3 i get no problem it only happens in widescreen but im not sure they are artefacts. Remember this is not any 'blocks' or anything on the screen it is like a small 'step' on the very edge of the actual moving picture at the top and bottom edges of the horizontal picture

Then these are not artifacts , but TRUE interlacement. As I had suggested earlier, view your recordings using a DEINTERLACE filter in your computer. TV programmes are telecast as interlaced video AFAIK.
