Yeah, but when you put the disc in, does it start right away? Or do you have to select "play movie" from some menu?

There's no way to hack a 40GB model to be like the 60GB one and play PS2 games?

I know you are looking for a Blu-Ray player. But if grandma has some spare money you might want to look into the latest LG reader/writer for your computer.

The only thing that concerns me is the firmware updates, will they be easily available. But at 6X burn rate on a BD-R is worth looking into.

Well she wouldn't be buying me a Blu-Ray burner... but once they become more affordable I may get one.

I mean, aren't BD-Rs still really expensive? It really wouldn't have any value since I still record all my stuff to DVD.

I would not purchase any Blu-Ray player that would not play home-made Blu-Ray structure on BD-5, BD-9, BR-R, BD-RE disks, profile 1.0 thru 2.0.

I sure all the Blu-Ray players will play the commercial disks.

I know for sure of two Sony Blu-Ray players that will play home-made Blu-Ray structure disks models Sony BDP-S2000ES and Sony BDP-S5000 according to CD-Freaks website.

Take your home-made Blu-Ray structure disk to the electronics store and test it on the Blu-Ray player your want and see if the player will play the Blu-Ray structure burned disks.

Blu-Ray structure folders BDMV and CERTIFICATE to an ISO image put on BD-5 (4.7gb) or BD-9 (8.5GB) OR BD-R (25GB) or BD-RE (50GB)

Do most standalone Blu-Ray players (or PS3) support burned Blu-Ray discs?

What about DVD-R? I have tons of stuff recorded off TV or VHS on DVD-R and any player I buy must be able to play those! (I know PS2 had issues with non-bitset burned discs...)

I know that the PS3 will play burned DVDs just fine.As for burned blu-rays
I don't know I have never used it do to cost

I'm pretty sure the PS3 can play self-burnt Blu-rays, just not quite sure which format it accepts out of the list. If it is a software limitation (most likely, if one exists), then I think it will be cleared up in future firmware updates. I do know that it accepts AVCHD.
