But you have to reencode the video. The subs has to be burned into the video image, and can't be removed. Use virtualdub and either the subtitler filter or the vobsub filter depending on the subtitles format.
But of course I think it would be much better to keep the subs seperate from the avi, unless you need to use a player that can't display the subs dynamically.
