Microsoft DirectX Download And Location Problem

I am trying to download and install Microsoft directx end-user runtimes (aug08)

The program asked me where on the harddrive do I want to put these files. How do I know? Maybe C:/windows/system32 ?

In the past the program updates just downloaded and installed.

Also, from Microsoft the latest directx end-user runtimes (nov08) won't even let me install the program.

I checked with START/RUN/DXDIAG and the program says directx is working correctly and ran all the test and was OK.

I'll lost, running Xp version 9.0c

    Hi ed,

What Service Pack are you on!?!?

If you are online ... why not have Windows install the latest for you ... if you have no issues with that method. I myself prefer to download the Application and install it myself ... because then I have the file and I can use it anytime I want ... nonetheless ...

    DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

    DirectX End-User Runtimes (November 2008)

    DirectX End-User Runtimes (August 2008)

I am sure you already have the 2 above links ... but these are ".EXE" application ... just download and then execute and should be Automatic!!!

Also check this Article ... might give you a hint ...

BTW, just out of curiosity why are you even upgrading your DirectX ... did you get prompted to do so ... or needed for a Game!?!?

    G!

      @gonwk
      Thanks for your help.

I am on service pack SP3 for windows Xp

In the past, when directx for end user came out, like Aug08, I would install it in August and it would execute and that was it.

I was going to do the same for version Nov08 in November but that did not work.

      Here is what is happening:

In version Aug08 I have it on my desktop when I execute it, it starts the process and then asks me where do I want to install directx end user Aug08 on the computer. In the past it automatically installed.

In version Nov08 I am using the web install setup install version (295kb) and then trying to install the Nov08 version.

The web install version tells me this:
Setup could not download the file. Please retry later or check network connection.

So I am lost. Are you supposed to update directx when a new version of directx end user comes out, like in Aug08 and in Nov08? Does SP3 update directx automatically? The computer said nothing about updating, I thought it is something you were supposed to do in Aug08 and in Nov08.
      Where am I going wrong?

        Hi Ed,

I have few posts for you that it might help you ... one of them is direct download of the DirectX 9.0c Nov 2008 and some interesting reads about this specific problem you mention ...

XP SP3 Brings Nothing New for Gaming

DirectX redist fails to install on Windows XP SP3

        do i need directx?

        DirectX 9.0c (full package)
DirectX 9.0c will help improve multimedia experiences on most PCs. This latest version of DirectX offers better security, updated graphics, faster frame rates, and support for massively multiplayer games. It also features more immersive audio when running and displaying programs rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation and surround sound. If […]

NOTE: Ed, I have NEVER used the above "SoftwarePatch" site ... so may be ask one of the Old-Timers here before trying that site ... but reading Guides and Tips ... I don't think it can hurt.

If your System is running just fine ... then leave the DirectX alone ... unless you are trying to play some wild Game ... in that case search (google) that Gmae name and how to Opotimize it for your Desktop/Laptop ... instead of just upgrading DirectX.

        Hope this helps out.

u don't need to update every month unless some program told u u need some specific month directx update first, and it happens a lot...

though it should never be a problem to update to newer directx...
once or twice some program i was installing prompted to install some specific months update but instead i downloded and installed the newest from web.... thats on vista and it worked fine.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

Yes, that picture is it, that is the same thing I got from Microsoft on directx-setup.

                  @gonwk

Thanks gonwk, you have been a great help.

I am going to do what you said on Directx 9.0c (full package)
                  Actually that package is
Directx-Nov2008-redist.exe AND comes with the DXSETUP.exe

I am going to follow their instructions at that web site and download to the tempory folder on the desktop, and then execute the DXSETUP.exe that comes with that package and then hopefully download all the files in that package to the proper location.

It appears the problem is with MICROSOFT DXSETUP.exe (it won't execute) any version of directx redist. Also the website you gave me on XP with SP3 was also a great help.

If softwarepatch got the file DXSETUP.exe from Microsoft (and I think they did) then I will have the same problem as before, and will have to wait until Microsoft fixes their DXSETUP.exe
