I want to play an mkv on a dvd player, Help?

I have a bunch of mkv files that I would really like to enjoy on something other than my laptop screen. I've been searching around for a way to convert the mkv files to avi's, but I've across the problem described here:

But it's hard to follow and quite confusing. Assuming I get the MKVextractGUI to recognize the AVC video track, which I haven't yet, how would I remux to get something playable?

    Also, this post seems relevant:

    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showpost.php?s=7Nero Serial Removeda13&p=416837&postcount=9

But I don't understand how to go about doing that.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I experimented with a couple of mkv's, used dvdflick to convert to mpeg2 and authored dvd's, there was some minor loss in video quality but played on almost all dvd players

I tried following the instructions on this page:
VirtualdubMOD doesn't work with all types of MKV and OGM video. But you can use: MKVExtractGUI to extract video, audio and subtitle from MKV files.

To no avail... The video files I have seem to not be supported by this older software...

I watch all my mkv files on my TV which is connected to my computer through a DVI to HDMI cable.

I tried this and the resulting dvd is a huge loss in a quality and shaky images. Very unpleasant to watch. But Thanks for the reference for the free software!

            I am with JMET ...

I was also gonna say go with HTPC set-up. You can do everything and no limitations.

            G!

Not a bad idea, I already use my hdmi out on my laptop for this sort of thing but I wanted a way to keep the files on a dual layer dvd to be playable on a standalone dvd player, so I can delete the files from my hard drive.

I'm beginning to think that there's no way to do this... ?

                Curious,

Why can't you back up the file in the mkv format on disk and play it on your PC to HDMI to TV when you want.

Then you could delete from hard drive?

I just want to eliminate the computer from the equation, less things to hook up, you know? Just makes life a bit easier.

I did a search on the web.

If you are desperate and daring here is a program I have not heard of.

It say's it's freeware for mkv to dvd only.

If you try it, please pose back your results either way so we all can learn.

                        Thanks

                          Hi Kovgt,

And can you run the Virus Checker on it after you install it to see if it catches anything. By the way, the Sites that offer this software ... I have never visited before.

                          G!

                            Thanks.

I'm reluctant to try it because the first replier had suggested free software that did the same thing. It worked, but the resulting video was almost unbearable to watch. Really shaky, low quality video. It was pretty strange. I'll try it out maybe tomorrow, and I'll post the results.

                              Yo Kovgt,

I don't know how I had forgotten about another "Proven" program to do just what you want ... go directly from "MKV" to "DVD" format ... it is this program and has been updated recently ...

I know the name says "AVI" but it does take "MKV" input! Make sure you make the right selsction for your DVD Format.

                              Avi2Dvd 0.4.5 Beta
Download Avi2Dvd, an all-in-one tool to convert Avi/Ogm/Mkv/Wmv/Dvd to Dvd/Svcd/Vcd files, with just few clicks

Try it an post back with your results.
