Problems with Codec Packs vs Individual Codecs

    Hi folks,

I am hoping to get some answers/advice from the Experts here ... guys like r0lZ, Blutach, Chewy, Cynthia, LUK, Wombler, Anonymez, LocoEng, (sorry if I have missed someone ... it was NOT intentional) ... you know the folks that write proggies and or help their development and rate them ... so they know exactly what is needed for Video work ... But feedback from all will be APPRECIATED!

I have currently installed Vista Codec Pack 5.1.4 and VCP X64 1.7.0 by Shark007 on my laptop that has Vista Home Premium, SP1, 64-Bit.
I kind of like it but also not too crazy about it since it is very Aggressive in it's method of installing it's Codecs on my laptop. What I mean it TAKES OVER and deletes my already INDIVIDUALLY installed Codecs ... like XviD, FFDShow, and so forth.

The reason that I need those individually installed Codecs to be left alone is because some of my Video Applications LOOK for those Codecs in their Own Folder and when they don't see it they will NOT run.

Q1: What is the Best way to go ... Individually installed Codecs or Codec Packs? If Codec Packs ... which is the BEST for Video and Audio work? You know the most Common Formats which is playable on Standard table-top DVD Player.

Q2: If you recommend Individually installed Codecs then ... please give me a list that someone would need for Video work ... you know Home Videos, dvds, AVI, MP4, and what not ... etc?

Thanks for all of you folks Help & Time,

    G!

thats because its already installed by codec pack. u have xvid installed, u have ffdshow installed and so forth, so its almost like indivisual codecs.

if u want to change settings in ffdshow just open ffdshow in vista codec pack program folder..... so forth.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

both divx and xvids are playable, my pioneer dvd player even plays ac3 encoded xvids / divx files.

        Hi atifsh,

I am going to uninstall my individual XviD and DivX codecs and then install VCP Codecs ... and try running the GUI's that "count" on certain "Paths" for these Codecs ... I am almost sure they will say they can NOT find the Codec on my laptop ... although like you say they are there under VCP directory.

I remember long time ago when "Anonymez" used to be on this Forum ... he had a recommended list but I can't find the darn thing ... and may be now needs to be updated anyway!

        Thanks,

        G!

Nah I'm far too modest to be included on that list and it's the other guys you've listed that are the real experts here.

I do try my best though.
