Transferring Data From XBox 360 To PC

I tried the method trying to transfer some data from my XBox 360 to my PC and when I plugged my memory unit into the USB adaptor I kept getting a message on my PC screen asking me if I want to format the memory unit. Why would I want to format it when I'd lose all the data? That message was stupid.

Can this be done with a memory stick that I plug into the USB socket in the XBox 360 where you take the memory unit out, plug the memory stick in and use the same Copy option?

What USB adaptor are you using? Is this a third party one? Because as far as I know, there isn't an official way to backup Xbox 360 data to your PC.
