Curious question about AVIcodec and GSpot

I am new to this and will learn. To anyone with suggestions I really appreciate your assistance.

I did search on google for this issue and on this forum but found no results with any answers, not much results found at all.

I am transfering my home movies off a Sony miniDV cam and in type 2. Have not done any compression or editing on any of them. My next plan after transfering is to split them up by dates.

I used WinDV to transfer the files on a Vista Ultimate x64.
All of my files are atleast several gb in size because most of the tapes are atleast 60 minutes long.

They also play just fine in VLC and I am able to open them in VirtualDub.

But I am concerned about the messages I get when checking with AVIcodec and GSpot and want to find out what they mean before I start doing anything with the raw files.

Now to the two specific questions I have

    [AVIcodec question]
When checking some of them in AVIcodec it will give popup message:

    file.avi is incomplete (too small)

What does that message mean, is there something wrong with the file?

    [GSpot question]
When checking some of my files in GSpot in the Container section there will be a Note.

Example: Note: 11.4 GB uneeded bytes at end of file

    What does that mean?

Anyone know where I can find out the answers, such as another forum if nobody knows it here?

I'm not big on digicam transfer or video capture. Others may chime in with true experience. But it sounds like whatever saved or transfered your files didn't update the information. Try downloading AviDemux v 2.4. If you are running Windows I recommend the gtk gui version:

Under Edit=>Preferences=>Automation Tab, check all the boxes. Now when you open a source file, such as .avi, if the index needs to be rebuilt it will do it automatically. Then just do a save. Try again in the info programs and see if it shows no errors.

edit: btw if it won't handle files that large you may need to use tools that work on the file headers. I have less experience there but it may be where to start looking until someone else with more specialized knowledge posts.

      Hi AKA,

Sounds like you are doing a "Fun" project.

AKA ... I am curious ... if you are able to open the Raw files in VDub ... and it is not squaking about missing this or that and it is not saying No Codec available ... then why are you using AVICodec or GSpot to check various info about your files.

As far as GSpot saying that there is x amount of extra unneeded bytes ... I have seen it on several of my AVIs ... and just ignored it ... but 11.4GB ... that is kind of "ODD".

Also try MediaInfo 0.7.2 (the 32-Bit flavor) and see if it tells you what you need without any "Alarms".

As Miles mentioned above ... AVIDemux will clean up most any mismatch and inadequecy of the files ... however ... make sure you do keep your Original until you are Totally done and happy with Final result.

Please post back your results to help the next person!

      G!

        MilesAhead,

I did one of the files as you suggested and didn't get the error. Still need to try another that gave error in both programs.

However AVIDemux split my home movie into two files, with the first being 44minutes and the last only being a little over 3 minutes. So not sure what I did there, didn't examine the settings. Only did enough in to to follow your suggestion.

          gonwk,

It should be fun, still gotta work around some of my hard drive space to get full into it first.

I was still trying to learn how to convert my home movies to xvid (or something else, still don't know yet). Just know I don't have room for 30 home movies around 13gb to 20gb in size.

So thought I would check them out just to see what information they gave.
Was also trying to see if either program showed if the videos were interlaced or not.

Any reason why I would install the 32bit MediaInfo and not the 64bit one for my x64 OS?

            Hi AKA,

My memory stinks lately ... I think the 32-Bit "INSTALLER" version gives you the Explorer Context Menu and the 64-Bit didn't ... anyway back when I tried it ... on the Older version ... yeah I think that was my reasoning ...

BTW, I just installed the Standalone Zipped version 0.7.22 on my Vista Home Prem., SP1, 64-Bit ... and it works GREAT ... so, your choice ... try 64-Bit flavor and then if not happy uninstall and go back to the 32-Bit flavor ...

As usual please Post Back your findings for the next person!

            Thanks,

            G!

              gonwk,

Installed it and so far as I can tell I do not get any alarms. Still learning how to use it though. But it gives information, but didn't get any popups or don't see any alarms anywhere.

Still plan to run the file through AVIDemux once I get a handle on that program and see how that does.
