Disk Space Problem+Compression Program?

Howdi all, thanx to thoose who help me out previously.

Now i have a disk space problem i was wondering if there is a way i can compress an avi file like into heaps smaller size and secondly the same with an mpeg file. mainly about the mpeg files, is there any software that can maximum compress an mpeg file

I am not sure of the program to use to compress MPEG files but be very careful when doing so as the more compressed the file, the more smaller it is, the more that can fit on disc, BUT !!! the quality reduces dramatically. In my opinon it isnt worth spending all the time downloading, converting, and burning to quality media if the end result isnt as close to perfect as it can be (for the sake of using a extra disc for top quality)
