Basic question about getting video feed to PC

This is very basic but... it is still a problem for me. I am wanting to import old VHS videos and convert them to digital format. I have the KWorld DVD maker which basically attaches the SCART socket on the videoplayer to a USB. I am running Vista, in XP mode. The hardware tab on the PC says that the USB connection is installed correctly. However, neither on Windows movie maker nor on the supplied software (Power Director/Producer) does it recognise any image from the video player when it is playing. What am I doing wrong?!
