    Problem Installing DirectX 9

Last week I finished building a new computer, and put win98se on it. Two days ago I downloaded a demo of Nero 6.6, but I couldn't finish the installation because I needed DirectX 9. After I ran the installation of DX 9, I got this message:

The cabinet file necessary for the installation cannot be trusted.

And, of course, the installation was aborted. I've gone to this page http://askleo.com/a_cabinet_file_can...sted_why.html, run scandisk in Dos, uninstalled and reinstalled DX9 3 times, tried to get an update from M$, but went round and round, including uninstalling Active X (only to find out M$ didn't provide a re-install link. And I'm been to Google's links, but to no avail.

Ultimatelt I'm going to run Ubuntu, a Linux distro, and have already partitioned the hdd. But in the meantime, I thought I'd reinstall 98se, and see if that will clear up the problem. I have 2 other 98s, and they're running fine. Don't know what happened here.

I'd greatly appeciate any suggestions. Thanks,

    Mocha

Hi and welcome to the forum, mochapolo!

Looks as this ones are the most common problems:

"A cabinet file is necessary for installation and cannot be trusted." ERROR during installation. This problem happens in most cases due to system corruption or users disabling their cryptography services. Please try the following steps to see if it resolves the issue.

Make sure your cryptography services are enabled. To do this, go to my computer | manage | services and applications | services. Then go to cryptography services properties and make sure the service is started and startup type is set to automatic.

If you are running Windows on a FAT32 drive, run scandisk.
Try the resolution steps in http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;813442.
Try the resolution steps in http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;822798.
Remove temporary files in %temp% and (if installing end-user runtime) %windir%\system32\directx\websetup Error

Q: Did the scandisc report any errors?

Thank you Cynthia! I can't find manage | services and applications | services in my Computer. Could you tell me how to get to "manage"?

      Thanks so much!

Haven't used Windows 98 for a long time - so I have no one to try one.
