might look at the latest beta bios

CPU-Z for Windows® x86/x64 is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system : Processor name and number, codename, process, package, cache levels. Mainboard and chipset. Memory type, size, timings, and module specifications (SPD). Real time measurement of each core's internal frequency, memory frequency. CPU-Z is fully supported on Windows® 11. The CPU-Z‘s detection engine is now available for customized use through the CPUID System Information Development Kit, a professional SDK built for the Microsoft Windows & Android.

use this to crosscheck the spd values reported by everest

        cas readings @ membus speeds

Chewy, I bow down in your presence.

I did as you suggested: pulled DIMM 2 and 4, and tried Recode again. The analyzing step completed OK, and then the encoding step started. The percentage completed continued to roll on until it hit 100% (which didn't happen when I experienced this problem) and then it burned! Successfully at that! I tried the DVD and it played perfectly. What a relief.

I am really curious: what was it about the overclock report that made you suggest to remove those two memory sticks, and why would they cause this problem?

There is some background that I should provide you with first. Originally, this machine had 2X 1GB OCZ memory sticks. I have had it that way for about two years. No problems. About a month ago, I had the opportunity to purchase two more of the same sticks for $60, so I did. They are the same memory, marked with 4-4-4-12 latency, just like the two that were already intstalled. I asked the store to check them first to ensure they weren't defective. They were fine, so I intsalled them and everything ran fine. I did not have any reason to use Nero Recode until about a week ago when this problem surfaced. Since the computer was running fine in every other way, I never considered that the additional memory was causing this problem. There you have it.

Again, thanks very much, and I would appreciate if you could explain what it is that you saw in the overclock report that led you to the solution.

            SPD Memory Modules:
            DIMM1: OCZ OCZ26671024ELGEGXT 1 GB DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM (4.0-4-4-12 @ 333 MHz)

            DIMM3: OCZ OCZ26671024ELGEGXT 1 GB DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM (4.0-4-4-12 @ 333 MHz)

this was the screwy part, even tho the ocz sticks have the same identifier(serial?)
            the spd's are different

now is it your bios running 4 sticks or ocz or the store that screwed up

post the overclock again with that dimm 1 and 3(old ram) and we can see what the mobo is running them at

are the bios settings on auto for memory?

Looks like your auto settings in bios are flawed, maybe the root of the problem

now it wasn't unusual for ram/bios to slow down when all 4 slots are filled and earlier motherboards

I doubt that you want to manually adjust those ram timings if your bios allows it?

all 4 sticks should run at
                4.0-5-5-13 @ 270 MHz

not sure if this is rocket science or witchcraft?

Do you recommend that I run with the 2 sticks that are installed and leave it at that, or make changes?

Can you return the new ram for refund?

It might not be defective, the defect might be your motherboard and it's bios

to tell you would need to test it and remove the old?

                      I could return the RAM.

But the motherboard... That would mean disconnecting everything and bringing it into shop, wouldn't it? And what would I tell them? The thing is, everything as far as I can tell, is running just fine. It's difficult to troubleshoot when things run OK. What would they be looking for? The problem starts when I install the extra two sticks. And the problem is only with Nero Recode.

If there is an updated version of the bios available, I can flash it and then see what happens.

the motherboard is technically ok, just you may have pushed it past it's ability to match up and dual channel ram, I asked about bios settings before, you didn't answer.

many mobos don't do auto worth a sqwat when it come to memory settings

the ram you have had should have been doing 4.0-4-4-12 @ 333 MHz not

                        4-4-4-10 @ 270

the system builder should have caught this

course we all get lazy/sloppy from time to time

OK, what bios settings should I post?

Also, the only way I know to views bios settings is to select that option during bootup. Is that correct, or is there another way to view them and post while the machine is running normally?

I just go into bios during bootup and then start fiddling with the settings and then use everest to verify that they are working right, however when you screw it up too bad your computer won't boot, or windows won't load or everest will crash your computer
