there are even larger issues than your media, starting with the age of your firmware

I got duped into a rack of 50 Memorex discs for $20. Won't fall into that trap again.

where did you get such an old burner?
I've had this burner since I built my PC, which was probably 8 years ago or so. Unfortunately, I don't have the cash at the moment to buy a new one, and since this guy has kept going all this time, I guess I just haven't thought about it.

Luckily a new drive will only set you back $30-$40...look at Lite-On, Pioneer and Samsung for a quality burner.

I took a look at this one from Pioneer, and it seems people like it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827129018

Any comments? I'm not very well versed in what makes up a good burner.

Sorry, can't get to newegg at work...what is the model number?

Do you have SATA connections? If so 215D should work well.

Don't know if it's still available but, they had the Pioneer DVR-215D for $39.99 a few days ago.

That 115D would be a great burner.

                  The 215DBK is $30 now

I'll be getting this drive soon.

I just ordered one on Thursday, but I still haven't figured out what it's going to replace yet. If it booktypes, I might replace the PX-810SA, switching the 810 into my wife's new system, (scoring some brownie points), which will be ready at the beginning of the week.

The problem with getting the error message "Burning Layer 1 Failed" in Nero Recode, has nothing to do with the DvD-Disc or the DvD-Burner.

Yesterday i got that msg in the 'working window', but even so it continued, and then said it was Successful
Today the same thing again. BUT ... i wasn't burning to a DvD, but to an image file one time, and to a VIDEO_TS folder one time, but with the same - bad - result!
Nero Recode finishes saying everything was a success, but only leaves a *.NRG file that is 1kb in size ...
My guess is that there's something wrong with Nero 8.xx.

Problem now after installing Nero 8.3.2.1

Now I am as well having issues with my Image Recorder writing to files and as soon as it finishes the file changes to be 1kb. Any suggestions?

                        Thanks!

Reverted Back to old version and no problems

I reverted back to an older version of Nero 8 that I had and the image recorder works perfectly. It is obviously and issue with Nero.

Hi bachya. Buying burners is like they told me a crap shoot. some will turn out great and some will just plain be crap. Don't go too much by the reviews on newegg. www.cdfreaks.com will have forums totally dedicated to the most popular burners on the market. Me personally, I had the 115d from pioneer and had to return it. Issues w/burning cds. Also pioneer hasn't been all that lately anyway. I have a 112d pioneer right now and that was sent to me as a recall. Great dvdburner but cds from what I've experienced and also read not so great. An all around good burner is always the way to go. they're not that expensive and the choice is always yours. Buying burners, it's not a job but an adventure. That said the suggestions for better media is worth taking.

I'm happy w/my 2 sammys. Still have the 112d pioneer as a total back-up. My 2 lg burners are also pretty good and also are backups. great readers the lgs are. You'll be ok. No risk no reward though.
                            SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Take the suggestions and follow the directions. The results will speak for themselves.
