Write down the steps that you are using and state the type of file that you are trying to work with (whether it is .avi, .mpg, .rm or anything else). And also where and when did you get that error message? You will be getting that message only when you are trying to open the video file, but definitely not when you are trying to apply the resize filter.

      virtualdub

Hi first of all thanks for your reply.
Well Im trying to capture from tv and when i choose video/set format it gives me a box with different resolutions and im trying to use 640 x 480 format and its giving me an error 418:unsupported video format. Ireally don't know what happened I used to capture in this format all the time. It only lets me capture with the program's default reolution which is very small.

Don't use virtualdub to capture. NEVER! bad boy, don't make me take off my belt now!

What capture card u got? Don't say ATI PAALLEEZZEE!!! Even my next door neighbours dog can make a better capture card.

Buy a hauppauge wintv go PCI card (dirt cheap) and you can be capturing DVD or better quality vids)

        use these settings:

        NO RECOMPRESSION
        CD QUALITY uncompressed PCM audio
        352*288/320*240 res
        YU12/YUY2 format
        30fps

capture! file size will be big yes, but use something like AVI_IO to split over several files, or have an NTFS partition

never capture using a codec, cause u lose TONS of quality,

Once captured, convert to MPEG2 (re-encode 3 times) then to DIVX or convert to whatever u want.

But u should never really convert a captured movie STRAIGHT to DIVX. why? u lose some quality etc....

so by converting to MPEG2 (and re-encoding 3 times) u will NOT lose quality (if u do it right) u will gain quality (94% of the time) and u r "securing" ur quality. then convert to DIVX, the DIVX codec will like - sorta take an exact replica of the MPEG2 files (sorta!)

hope u follow, yes I have done it, done it for over 2 years now and broken a few records + made a BROADCAST quality video.

u wanna see the vid? get in touch with me

if u capture at a higher res, u will lose frames + file size will be big. and no, u will not lose quality, u will get the same quality if u capture at 640*480 or 320*240/352*288.
