Can't play sound from AC3 wave format

Cannot play sound from an avi. Gspot reports the sound is ac3 (0x2000) Wave format Dolby, 5 channels, 384 bit-rate (76/ch, x5 ch) and sampling of 48KHz. Tried using Nimo bundle, also opened in virtual dub, but no sound comes out! it's not a volume problem, OK. Other sound formats, eg MP3 work fine. Tried with various players, DivX 2.0 alpha, BS Player, etc, with no luck.

Ensure that you have installed the AC3 codec . . .

How can I check whether the AC3 decoder is loaded? O/S is W2K. Nimo codecs bundle V5.0 appears as a registered application under control panel/add/remove programs. The documentation on Nimo states it supports an AC3 decode. Under the program group 'Nimo pack' there are various applications, but nowhere to launch an AC3 decoder application. Shouldn't this happen automatically from the DivX player?

Try installing Morgan Stream Switcher as well (in addition to the AC3 decoder) . . .
