Problems with converting Divx to vcd

    Hi,

I have a really difficult problem that I can't figure out. I have downloaded several divx movies from Direct Connet and now trying to convert them to mpg for a vcd burning. Well, for some reason none of the programs I have tried (Nero and Tmpg) fail every time I try. During the coverting they both give me an error message something like "unspecified error (-100)". I bet it has to do something with the resume at Direct Connect because the first divx converting failed at 42% which was pretty much when I resumed it the first time.

Hope someone knows how to figure this out. I'd really appreciate that! Thanks for any help!

The error is "VideoSourceAvi error: unspecified error (-100).

Do these downloaded DivX-compressed .AVI file play all the way through, without exhibiting any problems?

Yes. They play normally with all players with no erros. I have this problem only with converting which is very strange.

Load the original .AVi into VirtualDub. From under the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information". Post that information here.

I suggest you use the small and simple program call, AVI2VCD,
it's small but does the job correctly.
The reason with divx buring to vcd I suspect is due to the audio format of divx is mp3 audio, instead of the usual vcd format.
There is a program that comes with AVI2VCD that converts the audio to vcd compliant format, afterwards simply convert the video to vcd format for buring.
The program is pretty much self explanatory and easy to use.
              Works for me.

No, that should not be a contributing factor. Based on the fact that the audio length is almost identical to the video length, it's apparent that the audio is CBR (Constant Bit Rate) MP3, which TMPGEnc can handle without problems (It "gags" on VBR [Variable Bit Rate] MP3 audio, however).

Unfortunately, I can see nothing in the file information that would be indicative of a problem.

"The error is "VideoSourceAvi error: unspecified error (-100)."

I'm guessing that this is the error info from NERO (since I've never encountered such an error under TMPGEnc). Please quote the error you receive from TMPGenc.

I had the same problem in direct connect and figured out that my proxyserver added some overhead to the files when I resumed them. Maybe you have the same problem (if you use a proxy server). Try to disable your proxy when using Direct Connect (or try some free proxy-servers if you must use them).

The unspecified error (-100) is well-known in Virtualdub (in TMPGEnc I'm not sure) but as you said can have something to do with corrupt frames. Some players know how to skip them but when you convert them EVERY frame is used so when only 1 simple frame is corrupt the program stops...

Try to use a defreezer program (or skip the sections in Virtualdub with the 'key'-symbol) and then try again to make a VCD with TMPGEnc...

                  Best luck...
