English subtitles for deaf person

Hi,

I would like to find out how to get subtitles to put on top of divx movies i already have, or how to create my own subtitles if they are not already available. I have read the info on how to remove foreign subtitles.

I was wondering if it is possible for someone to give me a list of exactly what i need to put subtitles on, and how to do it.
