    Xmpeg 4.5 convinced me...I'm a dope

I reinstalled XP Pro, clean. I installed Divx 3.11 and Divx 4. I installed the Radium Codec. Every time I run the once reliable Xmpeg 4.5 stops. Doesn't lock up, doesn't go black, just disappears. It leaves me with a 16mb avi file that is no good to anyone.

So I tried Flask 0.594. It goes all the way through, and leaves a garbled file that will only play in "The playa" and not WMP.

So what is the damn deal? I have tried custom settings, and I have followed the settings off the guides. Heck, I even tried the settings that always worked before. Nothing is new, just a clean install.

Is there a list somewhere that lists the codecs that should be on a windows based system? and those that shouldn't?

    Have you installed DirectX?

Yes I have installed DX. Should this be uninstalled? I noticed an unistaller on one of these sites, but none of the guides mentioned it. And it worked alright before.

DirectX seems to have a preference for being installed after all drivers, filters, and codecs have been installed. therefore, you might want to uninstall and reinstall it (now that you've installed all of those other files).

DirectX comes with XP as you know. And it isn't exactly as simple as Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs to uninstall.

How exactly does one uninstall DirectX. I ask b/c I had no luck finding the uninstaller I thought I had found.

Also, I have noticed a pattern. The program crashes at 50% doing a 2 pass of either 4 or 5 (depending on which machine I use). No they are not on the same computer, obviously they do not and can not co-exist.

So try to wrap your brains about this one....

I DLed Xmpeg 3.0 today, ran the registry file (why doesnt one of these come with 4.5?) and encoded a movie. Perfect. No problems.

            What the hell?

              Whatever works - Congratulations!

Just so you know, I've not had any such problem with XMPEG v.4.5, nor have I ever had v.3.0 on my system (although I do have about a dozen variations of Flask installed) - so I don't know what effect the "registry file" might have.

Would I be correct in believing that XMPEG v.4.5 also now works properly for you?

As far as uninstalling DirectX 8, a Google search disclosed the following:

              "To uninstall DirectX 8
              1. Start Regedit
              2. Find key
              HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\Software\Microsoft\DirectX
              3. Change the value 4.08.00.xxxx to 4.05.00.xxxx"

You guys may fear terms like "product activation" but "RegEdit" scares me. That said, I will check it out. I do not know if XMpeg 4.5 works. But I was saying that no registry file came with it.

I noticed another issue. In 4.5 under audio compression my choices include (with the Mp3 codec) 48,000. However with Flask 0.594 and Xmpeg 3.0 I have no choices with that frequency. Only 44,100. This is unbelievable odd to me. Should it be?

Does this have anything to do with the Lame dll coming with the program. Again I am not using Lame on my system I am using Fraunhofer.

In your Flask 0.594 and XMPEG 3.0 setups, you probably have the audio checkmarked at 44,100 (instead of either "keep the same" or 48,000).

Since you've found a satisfactory solution (using the earlier XMPEG version), I would not any longer suggest trying to uninstall and reinstall DirectX. But, I'm going to speculate that if you now try using XMPEG v.4.5, it will work properly (as a consequence of running the registry file for v.3.0). Do let me know if I'm correct about this.

Xmpeg 4.5 works no better than before.

And acutually, my settings are all correct. It's as if 4.5 is looking at an entirely different codec. But again, I only have Fraunhofer installed on my PC.

This is pretty upsetting. Im anxious to see what two pass Divx5 can do. However the one pass (when reconstructing the image) is an excellent quality.

I may format soon, I just received a new board and cpu.
