Here's an interesting error message from VirtualDub. Tried opening a standard .AVI file I captured through the firewire card from the digital 8 camcorder. VirtualDub refuses to open the .AVI file, giving the error message "No Video Stream Found."
Now, this is strange because when I try to open an MPEG-1 file created from the .AVI file with TMPGenc, VirtualDub works like a champ. Opens the MPEG-1 file right up and does its thing.
When I try to open up a SVCD MPEG-2 file created from the .AVI file with TMPGenc, however, I get the error message: MPEG INPUT FILTER: Codec PACK SYNCHRONIZATION ERROR.
Details: Running Windows 98SE with the upgrade to the latest Microsoft DirectX 8.1 and DirectX capture extensions. (Works great. Has really improved playback of captured video.) Also downloaded and installed the Nimo Codec Pack. Have also installed AVISynth along with the AviSynth wrapper.
Both Windows Media Viewer and Ulead Studio Professional 6.0 can open and play back my captured .AVI files without any problem. However, both VirtualDub and Vidomi give error messages when they attempt to open the selfsame .AVI files. Vidomi gives the error "Corrupt or Invalid File."
Mind you, that's the exact same .AVI file that Windows Media Player opens and plays without a problem.
TMPGenc has no problem opening and converting my .AVI files, and Ulead Video Studio Pro also opens and edits my .AVI files without any problems -- WIndows Media Player also plays back w/o difficulty. Only Vidomi and VirtualDub seem to crash & burn when trying to open .AVI files I've captured through the firewire card.
Alas, the ability to use VirtualDub on MPEG-1 files doesn't help much -- MPEG-1 are by definition low quality video files, and I'm interested in using VirtualDub's filters on high-quality .AVI files before encoding 'em to MPEG-2 for SVCD.
Have had good success burning SVCDs. VirtualDub sounds (and looks) like such an impressive program, though, that it'd be nice to be able to use it. More's the pity, it just doesn't like my .AVI files. Is there something obvious I'm missing?
