Please share your opinion of rebuilder

I am to the point now where I am more concerned with quality vs speed of my backups. With that being said I would like to have a little less interaction with the process if possible.

I currently back up with

Pge Edit (wizard) - DVD shrink - DVD D


Is DVD Rebuilder a hands off start to finish program or will I still need to Run the Wizard and monitor the process?

Is the quality of the of Rebuilder noticeably better than shrink?


Is there a start to finish program available for purchase that handles Accross and produces great quality?

Its works in one click and three click mode so you can choose to monitor it or let it run automatically from start to finish.

Is the quality of the of Rebuilder noticeably better than shrink?

It is not noticibily better, its much much better. DVD-RB uses an encoder at the back end like CCE, HC etc and therefore the results would be as good as original(with proper settings), whereas Shrink is a transcoder and shows some quality concerns (based on compression %).

Most commercial programs available will handle the ARccOS ripping process but you will still have to use some transcoder or encoder later to build your DVD (if its a DVD5)

you can then directly burn a 1:1 copy (Using DL DVD).

My method:

1. Rip with DVD Decrypter (use wiz if necessary)
2. Clean out unwanted garbage (trailers, FBIs etc) with PgcEdit and/or VobBlanker
3. Use MenuShrink if necessary
4. Reduce with DVD Rebuilder. I use Procoder 2, but HC Enc is real good value for $$$. Use it on 2 pass "Best". If necessary, use RBOpt to tweak your target size.
5. If your encoder permits, tweak further with Rockas's Rebuilder Matrix Editor - this is very handy for low bitrate on extras (esp if you have stolen space from extras and done them in half D1)
6. Output to files and make ISO with PgcEdit (fixing menu buttons) and burn with ImgBurn

Too easy.

And as for the original question, the quality is unbeatable.

Shrink can look just as good as DVD-RB as long the compression is above 75% or so. Make sure you use Deep Analysis and AEC quality settings. It really depends on what size display you watch the DVD's on. The bigger it is, the more problems you will see with Shrink stuff.

I would raise that to around 85% to suit my taste

But you have a 3 metre screen to project on. That is twice the size of my one.

I let DVD-RB rebuild an exact backup of "Arabian Nights" (2:55h + extras) with an exception that the motion menus are shrunk and the result is still clear. I like DVD Rebuilder for long movies

Here are my steps.

1. Rip dvd in file mode with DVD Decypter
2. Use DVD Remake Pro to blank extras, convert menus to still, remove fbi warnings and studio screens, edit and remove unused mneu buttons
3. Use DVD Rebuilder PRO with HC enc for large reductions, CCE for smaller reductions, output as ISO
4. Burn with DVD Decrypter at 4x
