Me too. I also like the LUMGAIN feature. I've found that a setting of LUMGAIN=2 works well to reduce the likelihood of blockiness in fade-in scenes. In testing I saw about a 5-6% speed increase in BEST mode on my Opteron processor. The difference in encode time between HC and CCE keeps getting less significant -- and the quality and functionality of HC keeps getting better.

Hank315 has earned his place a an MPEG leader -- and as it seems we all agree -- it is certainly appreciated.

I understand what LUMGAIN is for but I can't seem to find what SILENT and SCDFILE is for.I was also wondering if someone could point me to a link that explains what the pulldown is for and how to use it.And a big thanks to hank nice work

*SCDFILE
This command writes the frame numbers with a scene change in file <output>_scd.txt.

*SILENT
This command disables the encoder GUI, background encode. It might have a 
marginal speed increase.

Constant Quantization setting on HCenc 21

What about the Constant Quantization setting in HCenc 21? I see that it makes the encoder run only a single pass at a set rate rather than 2 passes. Some qusetions:

(1) What does checking VBR do to this if you have already set the rate at 3000, or 3500?
(2) This means that the output files may not fit a DVD5 since the constant rate. Is there a formula that can be used so if the single pass method is used (to save time) a bit rate could be entered in so the output would fit a DVD5? Could the figures from the prepare phase be used to calculate the ideal bit rate so the process is faster and the PC isn't tied up?

Art - single pass CQ can not nearly as closely predict size as 2 passes VBR. There's no formula AFAIK - you takes your chances.

Thanks blutach, I found this program called AutoQ3 but it is for CCE. I see the author has coded a program to work with HCenc called GetCQ + HIG for HCenc. Have you or anyone used this program? I can't figure out how to make it work or what to do after it does its thing? program can be downladed from http://home.arcor.de/autoq2_amsoft/

No, I always use 2 pass VBR. The time is just not a factor for me. If time worries people, they should use a transcoder such as Ner0 Recode.
