filters setup question

please point me in the right direction.

i want to try "removegrain.dll" filter(s). the film is a 1940's b&w. has grain that i want removed. after reading that "removegrain" has a better (or best) results, i thought i would give it a shot & download it.
because it comes with many other "dll's", i'm having problems finding instructions on how to set the parameters, in what order & where exactly in the ini (avisynth) file they need to be placed.
is there a simple guide out there (something as easy as copy & paste), & would it be easier/better to add/setup in dvd-rb or directly in avisynth ini file ?

i did find some instructions prior, & i thought i saved it to my faves, but, looks like i didn't & i can't locate where i found it

Check out these 2 links. I had similar questions some time ago. My general rule with filters it to use as few as possible. I find when I use removegrain, or fluxsmooth with diff. settings and then do the DVD with no filters I usually like the no filter version better. Read through these threads:

I put the filters in my plugins in the avisyth plugin folder so there is no load command in the filter editer.

yes, i've read these before, but after reading about the fundamentals, indicated that other filter (dll's) supplied in the same package need to be addressed also (in certain order - some appear more than once, etc).
it just seems too simple to use a single line command in the ini file. the other dll's won't be addressed, or will they ? it's a combination of all the filter dll's that attempt to improve the quality, right ?

check out doom9 I saw some time ago a post talking about the order to put the filters in. I have my filters in the avisyth folder but you need the right filter for your CPU I have in my folder these filters:

1. deen.dll
2. fluxsmooth25.dll when I enter it in the editor I just enter fluxsmooth
3. undot.dll
4. removegrainSSE3.dll when I enter this I use removegrain(mode=3) or 4

I use the SSE3 version since my PC is a AMD Athlon X2 64 dual core.

the bottom one lead me to the one i thought i saved before.

the top one is one of many fundamental info sites that can put a user off using filters (filters - in combination).

i've been spending most of my time on doom9 reading (trying to make sense of it).
cdrf is another with info.

i think my best bet would be to post/ask in the forum of the filter writer, & hope for the best. so far, it's not easy to make sense of it all

check out the avisyth section of doom9. I at most use 2 or 3 filters at a time if I use them at all.

as an example my editor in DVD-RB looks like this, BR7 told my way back when to use the minimum setting of deen with fluxsmooth so I do.

fluxsmooth(7,7)
deen()


or it may look like:

removegrain(mode=4)

that's it 1, 2 or 3 lines is all I use.

be prepaired for it to take more time to encode the video since the filters slow it down. Some REALLY slow it down.

from your previous posts, it sounds you're not very happy with some of the results ? some the filters are obviously very touchy & do more damage than good ? this is why a prefer a combination of filters - users reported great results.
yes, i'm aware that using filters slows the whole process.

i also found some russian info (re : degrainmedian_25), but had to email it to friend for translation. the only problem is this friend doesn't speak very good english
would you like me to post it here (if & when i get it) ?

i also wanted to ask the prog writer (on his forum), but i saw posts asking similar & simpler questions, & most other topics haven't been addressed since 2005, & some were never answered.
it seems they prefer their own standards of knowledge & don't bother with folks that aren't up to that standard (they discuss programing more) beyond me

For a translation whay don't you try http://babelfish.altavista.com/ and select Russian to English. Might be close and you may be able to figure out the rest.

My experience with filters is mixed. When I used a trancoder in the past the video would look rather harsh, now with HCenc 21 I will do a DVD with fluxsmooth 5,7 or 7,7 and I spend more time trying to figure out which version I like better (I have a tough time making decisions)

Most of what I encode now it movies from my satellite dish that I capture with my capture card then author the .mpeg to DVD files and run though DVD-RB HCenc with lumgain on 4. I use a Sony matrix that I got from the doom9 site, the poster had a high and medium bitrate versions and I use the medium bitrate version and the quality is much beter than the standard mpg in HCenc. I found it while searching for the high quality FOX matrix.

I can't remember the specifics Mentor, only that I tend not to use them at all really. Having done only a little experimentation, I found that filters had the ability to detract (I probably applied them poorly). I'm sure that some people will have some great tales to tell on specific sources but these can not be generalised, I don't think.

it's funny how we prioritize things. if something fails to do what we want to happen the 1st time, then we tend to write them off & never use them again.
but, in all honesty, there must be something greater in the filter's designs, as many report some darn good results.

from what i gathered so far, the single filters usage are the 1's that are being blamed, however, the multiple-packaged/dll's filters seem to get all the good raves.
sadly, there's lack of simple info needed to start with a positive attitude to the task people set out to achieve
