I've been reading so much that I'm going blind. Look, can someone expain, or lead me to a site that tells me how exactly codecs work, how software and/or hardware get effected by them? I'm capturing from a VHSC camcorder on an Ati 64ddr VIVO card. The card itself has several default codecs (ver 7.0). It happened to have a few new ones installed lately (where did they come from?) and when I experiment with the new ones (eg. yuy2), it seems that when I open the "view file information" in Virtualdub, or a simple properties check, there's an unknown format in Video. There's tons of info. on these forums, but could we please step back a notch for the beginners?
Also, how does audio compression effect a final VCD format. I'm not quite sure what the difference is between let's say 44100hz@128 kbit/s or let's say 22050hz @ 32 kbit/s.
I'm not that fussy, I just wanna archive my kids videos on VCD and be the coolest guy on the block.
P.S. I use Tmpngc to encode.
