Deleting Previous AVI Files

Hi,
I just started trying to use Virtualdub 1.8.4 and I can't find out where you can delete AVI files.

What happened is:
I tried to join about 5 AVI files and I couldn't get Virtualdub working right at first. But then when I think I have it working right, every time I try to join the AVI files, the size of the joined files keeps getting larger each time I try to join the files. It started out at 650 MB then each time I tried to join the files the joined file size got larger and larger. The last time I tried to join the files it's size was up over 3500 MB.

Is there a way to clear the previously joined files before you try to join them again?

When you join(or ''append avi segment" ) using Virtualdub ,make sure you have both VIDEO and AUDIO in "direct stream copy" mode.

Thanks for the reply.

I did have both the video & audio on "Direct Stream Copy" and then I had "Append AVI Segment" checked from the "File" menu as per the instructions.
Then I checked "Save as AVI" selected on the "File" menu after I had all of my AVI files loaded.

It appears that when I try to join a set of AVI files once and then try again, the first set of files are saved somewhere and they are also included when I try to join a second set of AVI files.

Like I mentioned in my first post, the first set had a joined file size of about 620 MB. The second time I tried to join the files the size increased to over 1200 MB. Then afterwards every time I tried to join the same set of files, the file size kept increasing until I got up to over 3500 MB.

This leads me to believe that each time I try to join the AVI files, the previous joined files are saved somewhere are included in the new joining. I just don't know where else to look for the previous files so that I can delete them and start over.

Here is some further info:

I do not get any video shown in the Input & Output Display Panes as noted in VirtualDub Help.

Could this be caused by a faulty download?

If you think your download of VirtualDub is faulty, just download it again.

I then tried to join my 6 AVI files again and when I clicked "Save as AVI" on the "File" menu, the joined file size was now up to 3600+ MB. If I total up the size of all 6 AVI files, I get 818.0 MB

Apparently AVI files from previous joining tries are being saved somewhere and are being included with each try of joining AVI files.

Ensure that under "VIEW" menu, 'input video pane' and 'output video pane' are both ticked.

When appending avi files, put all the segments in a folder serially numbered.Then,open the first file in VD.Now append the second segment.Here, you will find an option to automatically load linked segments by file name,right at the bottom of the window.If it is ticked, all your segments will be automatically appended.There will be no need to individually select each segment.

I am still doing something wrong. If I follow the steps below, I only get the 6th AVI file when I join them. Apparently I am not doing something to include the first 5 files.
What must I do to get all 6 AVI files joined? I guess I'm missing something somewhere.
At one point i ended up with a file size of over 16,000. MB so I aborted the Save function.


Start VirtualDub and load in your first AVI file (from the "File" menu).

1. From the "Video" menu, select "Direct Stream Copy".

2. From the "Audio" menu, select "Direct Stream Copy".
   
   <CENTER></CENTER>
3. From the "File" menu, select "Append AVI Segment" and load in your second file. Keep on doing this until all of your files are loaded (please make sure you load them in the right order, from the first file, to the last).
4. From the "File" menu, select "Save as AVI" and save the AVI as a new file.

You need not do this if you have the 'autodetect linked segments' option checked(must have the segments named serially,e.g. part1,part2,part3 etc.).


Moreover,as you append the files(before saving),the slider bar should give you an idea about the number of files appended,and the duration.

You could also use a simpler program to join your avi's if that is all you are trying to do...

Yes. AVIMuxGUI is not only simpler, it is by far the fastest of all in joining avi files.

I think VDM overcomplicates things for a simple task such as joining.

VDM is fussy about a lot of other things, VBR MP3 being the most important of these. That is why I nowadays prefer using AVIDemux. The only problem with AVIDemux is that it does not allow DivX as codec; it has to be XviD always. Ofcourse MeGUI is in a different league altogether.

I think I'll try the simpler program. I just want to join some AVI files.

I just got a new digital camera that also takes videos, but when you stop recording & then start again, it makes a new clip. I just want to join these AVI files into one.

What format are these files in ? Which codec does the camera use? Use Mediainfo to provide file information.
