    compressing a dvd rip

Hi there. I have good (I think) knowledge of capturing and converting to DIVX and how to make the source as good as possible etc...

I have downloading my first DVD rip film. It is really good quality and the file size is 699MB! I do have 700Mb Cd's but obviously it won't fit.

How can I reduce the file size??

I would appreciate it if you can help me (especially setarip(??))

There are credits on the end but if I try to remove them and re-save the avi file then the file size becomes over 1GB!

Remember, it is my first time dealing with DVD rips.

    Please help

Use Virtualdub to cut of the credits, set audio and video to direct stream copy and save as avi.

are you sure you used direct stream for both, video + audio??

i'd totally agree with benderman: simply cut off the end credits

If your filesize is 699MB and u have 700MB why it won't fit to 1 CD?
Anyway u can resave the AVI and lower the bitrate
          hope it works

Thank-you UncasMS, I agree to cut of the credits but file size then gets big! Even if I do direct stream copy for both a+v

It won't fit on one CD because of the "UDF/ISO" file system which takes a bit of space!

            Thanks

I know that increase of size can happen if you convert from asf to avi or avi to asf. Maybe it is an asf-file that only has the avi-extension.
If windows (or any other OS) says that the file has a size of 699MB it should fit on every 700MB-CD-R. Maybe the file is broken so that your OS can't identify the size correctly.

It is not an ASF file! It is 30000000000000% an avi DIVX file! Why will it not fit on one 700MB CD? Because of the file system the Cd has to use!

I have fitted even 700MB DivX files to a 700MB cd.
In fact when I am ripping I am trying to get the file exactly 1400MB
Just try it and you 'll see

well, I have tried copying the file to the CD but it says that the file is too large for the CD. I am using nero 5.5

I suppose u finalize the CD?
Because if u don't it takes space too

I don't really know why u use the UDF-file-system, but if u use it you will always have tu cut off 1-2MB. Better u change to 702MB-CD-Rs if u still want UDF.

I also can't find the solution for the cutting-problem. Try to check the file with norton utils or something like that. Maybe the header is broken and the os isn't able to find the real file-size.

I use ISO Level 1 and Format: Mode1 and it works fine
                          try them.
I am using nero 5.5 too
I can't understand what could be wrong
