    .BAT Application Possible Problem!

    Hi folks,

To the Software Gurus here ... I happen to download this little BAT ... not to use it just to look at the Command and when I right-click on it to OPEN it ... I thought it would give me an Option what to Open it with and instead it just ran in cmd.exe.

Restart.bat (shutdown -r -t 30) Stuff in the Paranthesis is what is inside the "Restart.bat".

Q: Has this screwball .BAT lodged itself somewhere in my laptop? If so, where!?!?

    Thanks!

    G!

If it's only that line then it should just reboot after 30 seconds wait.

      Hi Miles,

After the darn thing ran in cmd.exe ... I am still on my laptop and nothing is happening ... for the last couple of hours.

Q: Is this command lodged itself in the Registry somewhere!?!? if so, where and how do I remove it?

After this Screw-Up I learned my lesson to change the .bat to .txt and then look at it.

      THANKS!

      G!

        dont worry, gonwk

there is no entry referring to the registry but only the shutdown command

delete the bat file and everything is well

next time you are curious about the content of a bat file, please open it with any editor or wordprocessor, as it is plaintext content with extension .bat

download the attached TXT file and save it to *.bat or rename it to abc.bat and run the *.bat - it is "clean"

          Hi UncasMS,

          THANKS for your help.

I ran the Original .bat by accident when I said "Open" I assumed it will give me an option to Open it with Notepad ...

BTW, I ran it off of my External Hardware ... I do NOT have it on my laptop or C: Drive.

Q: Do I still run your little .bat?

          THANKS,

          G!

run my bat file and take a look at the content later on

it has nothing to do with your shutdown.bat

Just put a text editor in your SentTo menu. Then to read a .bat right click it, open the Send To menu and click your editor. Open this folder to add shortcuts to send to menu:
              C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\S endTo

If your userid isn't "Owner" then substitute your id for owner.

A neat trick is to go one level up from that folder, highlight it and click ^C to copy, then go in the folder and do ^V paste. Rename it "Send To SendTo"

Now in your Send To menu there is "Send To SendTo" right click any shortcut(has to be the shortcut, not an exe) and click Send To SendTo in the SendTo menu, and it will be added to the SendTo menu. And you thought you were confused before? heh heh

                Hi UncasMS,

When I tried to run it it gave me an option ... I guess the shutdown.bat I just clicked the Bolded OPEN on my right-click and since I am the Admin on this laptop ... it just launched!

BTW ... that was Cute ... I had my fingers crossed ... I was expecting my darn laptop blow up in my face!

@ Miles ... like I said before in some other Thread YOU are determined to either Smoke your Desktop or use me as a "Geane Pig" to smoke my laptop!

                THANKS Guys!

                G!

Actually I got that SendTo Send To trick off Leo Laporte when he was doing Screen Savers. It's a neat little recursive folder trick.

Master gownk stop playing w/bat files that are made to perform lil temporary tricks w/our equipment. They all more or less shut down PC and run some command to play w/get arounds. I'm sure you scanned it w/AV and some other Virus proggie first? You next time can save and scan and then open in Safe Mode.

That is a program that I watched all the time. To bad the screen savers is no longer on. It was a good place to learn.

Yeah, it's not even so much that the particular crew is gone. It's that the replacement is strictly for gamers. That's fine if they have their own show but I'm not a gamer myself. I prefer the tips & tricks type show. I guess now they figure there's too much info on the net. You just google to fix whatever.
