DVDtoMKV Beta Release

Hi,

i have the pleasure to announce the beta release of

DVDtoMKV

The program is opensource and was created by DVD, the author of DVDtoOGM. The sourcecode is released under a QPL license and hosted on corecodec.org, the same opensource community where matroska is hosted on.

The program is a kind of all-in-one solution DVD ripper, but doesnt include the necessary tools to rip the DVD to the HDD, or to make the indexing ( you need DVD2AVI for that, but we have plans to skip the process in future releases ).

DVDtoMKV will use BeSweet for the audio converting process, and for the time being VirtualdubMod for the video encoding process into MKV. File muxing is then done with mkvmerge, to ensure the highest possible quality MKV files.

We apologize for the huge size of the installer, but mkvmerge requires some not-so-small libraries to work, and we decided to provide them in the installer for the users convenience.

The installer comes in two versions :

Normal Installer :

Will install DVDtoMKV including BeSweet, VirtualdubMod and mkvmerge. avisynth needs to installed on your machine so the app works properly. Get it here or here

Full Installer :

Will provide the matroska playback pack also, for complete n00bs ( thats why we dont post a link here ).

EXE only

For those who already have all apps mentioned above, there is the EXE only version.

As we dont expect that users will randomly create either MKVs or OGMs, but will settle for one of them, its fully ok to remove MKV support from DVDtoOGM, if we can offer DVDtoMKV as an alternative doing more or less the same.

BTW, if you guys would like to host DVDtoMKV here again ( we didnt want to 'steal' it from you ), just gimme a ping ... we can use some hosting badly, and would be happy if you guys could also link to the Corecodec Project page for it, spreading the word that DVDtoMKV went opensource now .....

Sorry Christian I'm not an expert in containers and tools. What's the difference between using virtualdubmod or mkvmerge. Which are the benefits of using the latter??

But, has DVD decided to give up DvdToOgm development?? If he has not, then I'm afraid that his effort will be higher as he will have now to maintain two different tools instead of a more complex one... ¿?

No matter what I do, I'm having problems in dvdtoogm and dvdtomkv... after running dvd2avi, I always get an error loading source and sometimes when finished processing.. Invalid D2v-Project! What is causing this?

Are you sure your're using latest 1.41.1 version. I had the same problem with 1.41...

You have to sue DVD2AVI 1.76, and no other version for DVDtoOGM and/or DVDtoMKV ......

I'm about to try 1.41.1, but did the last one mean that I have to use or sue 1.76? I'm using 1.76 by LOLI.J modified by DVD2SVCD 1.05.

Why doesn't DVDtoMKV support SSA subtitle files? From what I saw it only does srt. The reason I ask is I don't know how to change colors in srt files to the extent I need them to be changed. An example is

I need "Engines won't enter the red zone." in a different color than the rest the sub. In ssa it's simple you just put in the color next to it and then put {\r} after to change it back. I know mkv's can use SSA so just cerious is that a plan to add that in the future?

Tools like DVDtoMKV are targeted to the normal user, and they dont use SSA. All easy Subtitling tools ( OCR on vobsubs ) will output SRT, and nothing else, while SSA scripts have to be made by hand.

Most fansubbers user SSA today, becaus of the possibilities they have with it .... but a fansubber normally wont use a All-in-One tool like DVDtoMKV .....

For the future, USF may be what you want ... unmei is still working hard on U96, his USF subtitling tool, and hopefully soon we will have USF support in MKV also .....

I just made this spanish translation of the Program. I don't know if this can help anyone but I wanted to post it anyway.

Just rename the file from *.txt to *.lang and move the it to the ...\DVDtoMKV\Language\ directory, it must be then available in the Options Tab.

Acabo de hacer una traduccion del programa a espanol por si a alguien le es util, aun faltan algunas cositas que no supe como traducir sin que se malinterpretaran o perdieran sentido pero ahi_ esta el archivo de cualquier modo.


Por favor renombra el archivo a *.lang y muevelo al directorio de DVDtoMKV y debe entonces estar disponible en la pestana de Options.

This software is unmaintained since 2 years now, you certainly dont want to use it.

There are various excellent tools and scripts to create MKVs today, most are using X264 (AVC ; h.264) video compression and AC3 audio. Use google, it will bring up links where you can find them.
