prevent divx5 from playing back divx3 content!

The following is an original posting by TSUNAMI and it is meant fyi only!

The file that is included has already been patched, so all you'll have to do is exchanging this file with your version!

Das nachfolgende Posting von Tsunami ist nur als Information gedacht.

Da die vorliegende Datei bereits gepatched ist, muss sie lediglich gegen Eure Jetzige ausgetauscht werden.

Thanx to Tsunami for the file!

You needn't change the registry, just change the byte in the decompressor

    DivX 3.x Decompressor-Priority-Patch

    FileName : divx_c32.ax
    FileSize : 240.400 Bytes
    FileVersion : 4.1.0.3917

    0. If you are running Win9x then go to Windows\System
If you are running Win2k/XP then go to Windows\system32

    1. deregister the current decompressor :
    regsvr32 /u divx_c32.ax

    2. change one byte in the file with an hex-editor
    Offset 0xc4a (dezimal 3146)
    change 80 to 90

    3. register the patched decompressor :
    regsvr32 /s divx_c32.ax

    thats all

Maybe you have another version of the decompressor,
then you must search for 'div3' (lowercase, without '),
and substract 174 (dezimal) of the offset where the strin 'div3' was found..

In my version the offset of 'div3' is 0xcf8 (3320 dezimal).
    3320 minus 174 is 3146 (dezimal) converted to hex : 0xc4a

'div3' is found 6 times, you must use the first one (lowest offset).

If you aren't firm in using an hex-editor,
I can make a patch or upload the patched version of the decompressor (look
    at geil.webpark.cz).
I also will integrate that patched decompressor in my filter-pack.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

tsunami sent me a patched version of the divx311 codec today, which you can download here:

Sily question: what's so bad about DivX5 playing DivX3 content? It's backwards compatible isn't it?

            not entirely

playback errors do occur every now and then.

Believe it or not, I don't mind DivX 5.x for playback (I was a bit annoyed at not being offered the choice during setup) - however I refuse to encode in v5

Reason being, I watch a lot of DivX content on the TV - and when you switch from monitor to TV while playing back with the DivX 3.11 decompressor the brightness goes down. I can only reset it by going into 3.11's property page, and that's a major pain when I can barely reach the mouse while viewing the TV, lol. Same thing occurs when changing resolution/colour depth while viewing a file.

DivX 5.x doesn't suffer this brightness issue at all, so I use it purely for playback, and being able to read downloaded v5 content - which gets recompressed into v3.11 pretty quick

                  Hi gus,

I have reinstalled windows several times and everytime I reinstalled the codecs something different happens. I also have 3 PCs and something that works on one does not on the other one. I recently posted a thread (in this forum) as I had problems playing back content I encoded using divx (any version) Just today I noticed that the problem was divx5

My PC has played divx3 files with divx5 with no problems for a while but after intalling all the software and driver for my camcorder and installing premier and a firewire card (which does not seem related to any divx files) it started skiping and jumping on full screen play back. I'll see if this "Patched divx3" works for me.

right now the only way I have to properly play the files is unistalling divx5

                  let's see what happens

It works (Don't forget to register the file)

                    Thanks

well, this really works and divx takes over divx 5.02, but the problem is that divx disables also DivxAnitFreeze, so if you have bad frames in video, the movie will freeze even with DivxAntiFreeze installed...
I think that disabling 5.02 from playing 3.11 content by hexediting .dll of 3.11 isn't good solution at all.

                        But Why?

                        hi all,

may i ask why would one like to prevent divx 5 from playing divx 3 contentS? i mean, what are the pros and cons if any?

                        thanks.

From my point of view, the decoding results of 3.11 and 5.02 differ. With 3.11 being the reference decoder, 5.02 has a slightly "smoothed" look. It is fine actually. It depends on whether you prefer the "original" look or this "smoothed" one. I, for one, am more of a purist and prefer 3.11 decoding 3.11 contents and 5.02 decoding 4.x/5.x contents.

so will it be correct to say it's just a difference between "smoothness" and "sharpness" playback then?

                            thanks again.

To me, yes. I don't know how the others find it though.

The decoding result of 5.02 is satisfactorily good. It is much better than the earlier DivX 4.x. For example, the colour was always washed out and video slightly blurred. I'm glad those people over at DivX have worked this out.
