    Matrix & The Godfather

Here's a quick update for you Blu-ray fans that should make you happy. We've just gotten confirmation from our sources at Warner Home Video that all three Matrix films WILL be released on Blu-ray later this year, likely to support the theatrical and/or DVD and Blu-ray release of The Wachowski Brothers' new Speed Racer feature film.

Warner has also confirmed to us that all the elements for the Blu-ray Disc release of the 1938 classic The Adventures of Robin Hood (staring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Basil Rathbone) have now been completed, so it's likely that the title will street sometime before the end of the year as well.

A number of readers have seen this online (and thanks to all those of you who sent the link in), so we decided that it's finally time to comment on the subject. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has just cleared 84 minutes worth of special features for a little something it refers to as The Godfather Trilogy Restored 2008 Bonus Disc. Yes, you read that right - The Godfather. Restored.

We can, in fact, confirm that The Godfather Trilogy has indeed been restored, and that our very own Robert A. Harris was involved in the project - a project backed by director Francis Ford Coppola and even Steven Spielberg no less (you can read a bit more on that here). The BBFC notice means that Paramount is likely planning to being The Godfather Trilogy Restored to DVD (and possibly even Blu-ray Disc) later this year. Note that we're posting all this in The Rumor Mill today, because the potential DVD release - and indeed the restoration effort itself - hasn't officially been announced by Paramount yet. As such, we don't have any more information for you right now than what we're offering here. But when the studio gives us the okay, and takes the cloak of secrecy off the project, Robert assures us that he'll have lots to say about it all for you here at The Digital Bits. So for those of you wondering why Robert's Yellow Layer Failure column hasn't been updated as often in the last year or so, NOW you know why. Hey... some things are just more important.

    Matrix on Blu-ray: yes
Godfather on Blu-ray: hard to say

They say that the Blu-ray production facilities are now at 100% capacity since they didn't anticipate that the format war would end so quickly. And Paramount has trouble getting production time ahead of the other studios.

And if Paramount's track record on HD is anything to go by (ie. they suck at producing titles, then ditched Blu-ray users without as much as a grace period, and then now ditch HD DVD without finishing all their announced releases), then it might be a while before Godfather on Blu-ray appears, or if it does, then it might be quite disappointing.

Hi Br7. Kinda lost on this. By restored you mean they'll add those extra 84 mins. and then redistribute the collection on Blu-Ray? What's wrong w/the dvd movie now if that isn't the case?

The 84 minutes are just the new special features right? The film has been restored/remastered though, with a lot of attention to detail. I haven't seen the new DVD box set listed on Amazon.com yet, but Amazon.co.uk has it for pre-order already.

I'm going to wait for the Blu-ray release since I already have the original DVD box set version ... but I suspect it will be 2009 before it gets released on BD.

How much more can they actually add to the Godfather? I mean both parts are about over 2hrs. already. Special features? ie: Director's longer comments, more blood splatter in the scene at the restaurant? I mean it is a classic and it's one of Pacino's flics I've yet to own, but those special features are almost a movie long. If it's bits and pieces integrated into the whole set and it adds some more story line or w/e then it probably won't be that bad. If it's a separate disc like many others that I personally don't even bother w/ unless it's some demonstration of special effects like in Tony Jaa's thai rope kick boxing, it'll be just extra unwatched footage.

I think the selling point of the new edition is not the special features, but the restoration. Some of the older classics released on HD DVD or Blu-ray looks really fantastic because they've been restored from the original masters. Some look as if they are brand new movies (apart from the audio, which is always much harder to restore)! I hope this restoration can be just as good.

Along with Band of Brothers, The Godfather Trilogy is in my opinion a must have - I've lost count the number of times I've watched both!

That's the gravy in a nutshell. I'm looking forward to owning it and that'll be as soon as I upgrade to a HD tv which will definitely happen soon. It's inevitable. For now they show the Godfather so many times on bravo or amc that it's almost impossible not to catch it on a fly by.

An online store here just opened pre-ordering for the set at $44 (that's the regular price of single movie Blu-ray discs). Just made an order, but probably won't happen, but nothing to lose.
