MES, Lets get a system report,
    Select Start -> Run...
Type in and Enter, "msinfo32" (without the quotes)

In the System Information window under System Summary
Select Components, then select File -> Export
Type in a filename & Save it

The file will be about 60k, you can either attach the whole text file to a message or delete the Codecs, Adapters and Protocol sections if you want to.

Hi Miles - this is interesting. Have you actually tried uninstalling both channels and rebooting as Taelon and benbryant suggested? As well, you might like to implement the idea of installing the Nero ASPI suggested in this FAQ.

But I'm willing to be that it is the DVD drive that is not being recognised and this ties back to your ATA/ATAPI controllers.

      Regards

@Miles E. Stone - You posted "My main and only question is how to run the dvdshrink on the 98se. The following error comes on the screen after its icon is checked:" DVDSHRINK encountered an error and canot continue. It failed to initiate ASPI device. The network request is not supported".

Win98SE as I recall is known as one of the flakiest versions of Windows. I would reinstall Win98Se and try it as a standalone machine to try and isolate the problem first.

          blutach,
If that were the case why are all other dvd dwcryptors and burners, i.e. DVDXCOPYXPRESS,1CLICKDVDCOPY with ANYDVD working perfectly? These programs have no problem recognizing the e: PLEXTOR DRIVE the way it is.

ALSO, The Power DVD. and WinDVD have no problems playing dvds in either optical drive?
Thanks for your help, plese keep trying.

@Miles - Did DVD Shrink ever work on this Win98SE machine? Have you tried a fresh install with it as a standalone?

I bguess that's a "no". It is not a risky process though.

Also, I have moved this thread to General Computing, as I feel it pertains more to the issues discussed there. Hope no-one minds

Miles, please try again and make sure you highlight "Components" then Export the file. It should be well under 100k in size, at least that is how it works in XP. I'll double check it with 98SE tomorrow.

I'm glad the report seems to indicate the IDE channels are correct but would still like to see the log file. Could you also double-check the error message from DVDShrink, is it really saying the Network request isn't supported?

for the error message: the last sentence of the message doe say, "the Network isn't suppurted. I work on getting the components list to send later.

                          Win98-shrink Problem

                          Taelon,
I have the file msinfo-components, however i could only zip it down to 100k as taelon.zip. Will the board take this?
I'll place it in the bottom part of this note in attachments:

I hope you can get it.

i'M HAVING problems sending you the component report from the win98 computer . I've attached it for you as info.zip in one of my last emails to you but apparently, since you have not responded, I assume you could not open it or never received it. Maybe, since the win98 computer is working otherwise so well, nowithstanding dvdshrink, etc., I should just leave it alone or at most uninstalling dvdshrink now that the force 1.7 has replaced the aspi layer, and then see if dvdshrink works after reinstalling it? If not, possibly just forgetting about using that program on that win98 computer. I bet the fix will screw up more than the gain of using dvdshrink which I can always use on my xp!!
Let me know what you think and if you would like or ever heard of the Shrinkto5 program..it's really better than dvd shrink and has its own css decrypter and better video free. Thank you for all your help, time, and great support.

                              Miles,
I have setup W98se on just a few computers this last couple of years,
first, it wasn't designed to handle 512 megs of ram, especially with a modern agp card. Second, I use directX 7.1 and IE 5.5, do windows update and
download the fastshutdown bug fix. Win98 is much faster than Wxp and for
that reason it's much more unstable, especially above 1 Ghz. Fat32 wasn't
meant for large hard drives >32 gigs. I hung out in the MS help groups
towards the end of W98se's life for a couple of years.
I only use W98se on computers in the sub gigahertz range and if vid memory
is less than 16 megs but system memory is over 128 megs I prefer W2k.
You're trying to run a porsche down a country gravel road that was designed
                              to handle a 56 chevy.

I just wanted to get dvdshrink to work on the win98! I guess, I'll give up trying and anything new, play on the xp!! Using the win98 is like , "giving a dead man an enema" Thanks for your post,
