i just returned from the computer workshop, and i spoke to the guy who works/upgrades my computer...
he told me that 512 ram is more than enough for dvd burning, and said that extra ram wouldn't do anything. unfortunately, he doesn't know very much about dvd logs and burning, so he couldn't assist.
You are sharing 64 megs with onboard video, so you don't have 512 megs.
And you are trying to do video encoding work, not just dvd burning.
All those background processes I was warning you about are eating some too.
muzz, the stuff you are trying to do here's about 10 times harder than adding ram!
well, you make a good point about the background purposes. i thought i cleared those up...what were they again?
i think i'm gonna format my hardrive. wipe it clean and start again...i got bluescreens again tonight after clearing away my main hdd, it is now 65gb of free space. still it won't let me burn...
funny little aside; tonight i was using spybot to see if i had any spyware; and i kept on getting bluescreens right before the end of it. something was triggering the bluescreens when i was spyware checking. i think i have a virus that doesn't let me burn dvd videos. so frustrating...i'm gonna have to make a fresh start, which sucks, but there's nothing else i can do, really...
now, some questions...with the dvr-108 dvdrw, i got a nero oem suite 3. i've updated every so often over the year. now, when i reinstall nero, should i just leave it as it is, or keep on updating? are the newer version of nero worth getting? i think i read somewhere here that they have bugs...
and what is 'incd'? is that worth having?
now, if indeed i do have a virus, will a format get rid of the virus???
i think what the tech guy was trying to say was that extra ram wouldn't make a difference with regards to being able to burn dvd videos. he said that 512 was enough (less 64), and that it was a software conflict.
i like how nero gives the option of being able to burn data/video/mps etc...can you author dvds with dvd decrypter and imgburn? also, i burn mp3s a bit, so i need that...
it looks like i have a virus/trojan. will that infect both my c and d drives? if so, does that mean i'd need to format both drives???
muzzbait,
don't format the data drive, update your virus scanner,
and reboot into safe mode, ctrl or F8 right before windows loads,
chose regular safe mode, do a full virus scan of system drive.
could you recommend a good virus scanner? a good trojan scanner? i would be more optimistic about it chewy, it's just that something makes me think that even if i do get a good anti-virus, as soon as the virus is detected, i'll be bluescreened again...
so...no blue screens in safe mode, right?
i'll put the format off for now. i'm just worried that there has been some irrepairable damage done.
i followed that link you gave me for the trojan scare, and there was an ad for a 21 day trial for 'a squared', a programme which checks for trojans and other malware...
anyway, i found ALL manner of trojans. gator and yoursitebar and the like. i had like 50+ just sitting there on my harddrive...so, i deleted them all, restarted, and on a whim, decided to try and backup a random dvd with dvdshrink, and had success! it must've been a virus/trojan that had screwed around with my ability to create video dvds (through authoring or backing up), and now it appears to be fixed!
i'm gonna try authoring a random dvd to see if that works too. i have a good feeling about this, i must say!
thanks so much for your assistance and advice and everything else. if anyone ever calls you 'fuzzball' or anything equally derivative, you send 'em to me! you're a champ, a mighty wookiee and an excellent pilot. thanks so much...
also, thanks to blutach for your tips and advice, and for pointing me in the right direction. you're both champs!
