Issues with authoring DVD...

i rejoiced too quickly...

you see, the dvd backing up seems to work, but i STILL can't author dvds...three times in a row the computer restarted on me...very frustrating...VERY frustrating.

what should i do...

okay, i kept trying to author a dvd, and after about 5 restarts/bluescreens, i managed to get an 'error' log...

hey,there. been doing some reading here for a while,and after burning a couple of hundred dvd"s,i had the same problem. i always used dvd decrypter and nero. took a while to fix it but what i did was uninstall nero and re-install it without the updates.every time i update nero 6, i get the blue screen of death when i"m burning a movie. without the updates it works fine. hope this helps.

i deleted nero, and re installed it, without any of the upgrades, and i still can't author any dvds. it seems that 5 - 10 minutes into the actual transcoding/authoring process the error screen pops up...

You say you are trying to author a DVD. What exactly are you wanting to do? What are you trying to accomplish with NVE? I presume the errors are in NVE and not in burning a DVD.

okay...i have video files which i am wanting to burn to dvd. my crappy computer screen is small and my computer chair is uncomfortable, so i just wanna burn these video files to dvd so i can view them on my tv.

as well as being unable to author/create my own dvd-video (it gets about 10 minutes into the actual 'transcoding' process), i am unable to back-up any of my dvds. i've used every programme (dvd43/anydvd in conjunction with dvdshrink/clonedvd/dvddecrypter) and i either get bluescreens, error logs or restarts.

even MORE odd is the way that i can burn music cds, data cds, data dvds but NOT video dvds with this burner. there is something seriously wrong, and i have no idea what i am doing wrong. part of my just wants to format the harddrive and start again, and the other part of me is just fed up with putting so much time and effort into this computer. i really don't know what to do. i mean, i'm not a computer-tech educated person, but i'm not ENTIRELY illiterate with computers.

it's a bug or a conflict or SOMETHING. i've had this stuff happen to me before (not dvd burning related). one programme conflicts with the other. so i have to delete one and reinstall it, and the problem is fixed. this is completely different, however...

i really don't know what is wrong, how to figure it out, or what to do. the shop where i bought my computer couldn't schedule me for a check-up being the HECTIC time of the year, so for the next 7 - 10 days i can't get anything done about it...

sorry to pester you all about this, it's just that i have nowhere else to go. i'm not a freeloader trying to have his computer issues worked out by someone else, i just have no other options.

When you say author/create your own DVDs - what is the source material and what progs are you using?

As for burning, I presume you have tried DVD Decrypter/ImgBurn? Updated firmware, got good media? Burning at slow speeds?

Have you tried a drive cleaning kit?

I suspect chewy has told you to reformat and reinstall just what you need. IMHO, this will not include Ner0. For simple DVD transcoding, DVD Shrink will do fine and I have already mentioned great burning software. As well, there is no need for DVD43 and AnyDVD, which just get in the way of DVD Decrypter.

the source material is videos i've got here on my harddrive. i have attempted to use nero to burn these episodes to dvd. i'm not quite sure WHICH programme i'm using, as i open 'smartstart' and select 'create dvd video option. you pretty much just add video files and create the menu according to your choosing. very usr friendly interface...

i have tried using ALL manner of media. believe you me...a friend in the neighbourhood works in a warehouse for a electronics chain, and gets EVERY known label at cost price, as well as the odd free sample here and there. sony, imation, emtec, ritek. so far, i've noticed ritek to be the most 'compliant' of all dvd-rs.

i have indeed tried dvd decrypter to back up dvds. i manage to burn the image, however, when it comes time to burn the image onto disc, i don't get more than 10 minutes into that stage. the blank dvd remains untouched. the computer either reboots or i get a blue screen. without fail...

now, if by 'drive cleaning' you mean defragging or bad-sector checking, yes i have. however, my tech guy told me that for me to be able to use the dvd burner in 4 of the five ways (viewing dvds, burning data dvds, burning data cds, burning music cds), it would have to be something driver related. though he said he can't be 100% sure about that because he hadn't looked at my computer. all he did was diagnose the symptoms i provided...

actually, chewy told me NOT to format. i'm just close to giving up with everything and being drastic. you know, i would steer clear of nero IF i could find a programme which i could add video files (avi, mpg, etc) and create my OWN video dvds. i have video files sitting on my computer which i want to add to dvd. watching videos on a computer screen just plain SUCKS. the screen is small, the chair is uncomfortable and i can't relax at all. it's unpleasant. if there is a simple programme which allows me to create my own video dvd by adding my own video files, then i will completely stop using nero. along with that, i like to create my own music cds. nero is just convenient for me. if there was another way to create my own dvds/cds, i would do it...

how can you create your own dvd videos using dvd shrink? is it as easy to use as nero???

of course this had to happen at the busiest time of the year...

So these are AVIs or MPGs that need converison into DVD that you are "adding"?????

If they are not a commercial DVD, they may be badly made.

Sounds like you are using Nero Vision Express (SmartStart is just a portal into the various programs of Ner0) and these files convert to a DVD format. You then make an ISO and try to burn. You can make the ISO OK but can't get it to burn, right? (Tell me when I'm wrong).

You haven't told me the media IDs or firmware. I need this.

A drive cleaning kit is not a defrag - it's actually something you buy for a few bux and it physically cleans the drive. What is the make and model of the drive btw?

Can you do a regular shrink of a commercial DVD with DVD Shrink without problems (forget about the NVE "authoring")? Just pick out any commercial DVD in your collection and try it. Report back the results.

From Shrink, burn with DVD Decrypter: Backup → Select backup target → ISO image file and burn with DVD Decrypter

yep...these are avis/mpgs that need to be converted to dvd format. i can't be sure of the 'quality' or how badly they were made. i don't know how to even test for that...

well blutach, what happens when i try to create a dvd video is as follows: i make the menu background and design and all that. then, i go to 'burn' the actual project, or perhaps i click the button that says 'burn'. it 'transcodes' each episode (takes about 5 seconds per episode), and then it gets to another stage of the process. it is the part that says that the dvd will take 4 hours and this particular video will take 48 minutes, or whaever...so i don't even get as far as the 'iso' stage. it doesn't even convert everything. all it does is the 'trancoding' of each episode (about a minute or two), and then about 5 minutes into the first video's conversion (i think it is a conversion), i get an error screen, which asks if i wish to save the log, which i go, as i've attached it a few times already......


the firmware is up to date. chewy made sure of this. he gave me the link and then checked a log i posted and said the firmware was fine. as for the media, at the moment i am using ritek -- only problem is that i am not actually using them. a burning/transcoding/conversion doesn't actually get to the 'burn' stage. always stops WAAAY before it...

drive cleaning...hmmm...may be of some assistance. i took my computer in for a service a few weeks ago, and i got the all clear. nothing wrong at all. okay, my harddrive has the following stats: MAXTOR 6L080J4

okay...with dvd shrink, i get about 25 minutes out from completing a backup before it reboots. sometimes with a bluescreens, sometimes it just restarts on its own.

with dvd decrypter, i can copy a dvd to image, however when it comes time to burn that image, the computer restarts. it's frustrating...i dunno what other details you require...if you have any specific questions, please let me know and i'll try to find the answers out for you...

Not your harddrive - your DVD drive. See link in my signature that says what's my media ID and firmware.

What do you mean by transcode? That is a technical term. It certainly takes longer than 5 seconds per episode.

When you say burn do you mean encode? Burn means use your DVD drive to put data onto a blank DVD?

These blue screens sound very driver/hardware related. Might be time to reformat. Tested for heat? How's the fans? Not clogged? Anything else running using up CPU?

well, with nero, before each video file is transcoded, it does some 'clean sweep' and goes through each video file to decoded -- one by one -- and then encodes the first video file. maybe it is more of a "let's see what needs to be encoded" process. i'm not too sure...

i'll check your sig for the link and tell you the media id and firmware in just a second. man, there are so many variables, aren't there...?

actually yeah, i'm misusing the word 'encode'. what i mean is that the pre-encode part takes about five seconds per video file. the actual 'encoding' takes between half an hour to an hour and ten minutes per video file. it doesn't ever get to the 'burn' part, now that you mention it. it doesn't even finish encoding the first episode. very frustrating...

the tech guy on my block said that almost EVERY time i get a bluescreen it's memory related. something to do with overworking my system's resources. how do i test for heat? are there any programmes that can measure that, or do i need to measure it 'physically'? i'm thinking about the reformat quite seriously now. sounds like it might be for the best...i can burn all the data on dvds, just not the videos...

interesting tidbit; i just downloaded a demo version of nero 7, and i attempted to re-burn with it. about twenty minutes into the encoding, the programme (nero) just disappears! like, it completely vanishes! it makes no sense at all!!!

So, you don't have a burning error, you're problem is getting files to burn in the first place. So, it's not that you can't burn Vdieos, you can't get them to a stage to burn. So, forget about burning issues for the time being.

Test for heat - use speedfan. Did you open the PC up and look at your fans? HEAT and DUST are the enemy.

What happened when you tried to use DVD Shrink on a normal DVD? Let's just forget about Ner0 for a bit, OK? It's a POS anyway.

More I see this problem, it belongs in General Computing and not here in Decrypting. Thread moved.
