I've searched ebay and price watch, those socket A's are selling for a lot
more than they are worth. Weird, hardly ever seen that happen.
Too many motherboards not enough cpu's?

As I said, the only option to a 32 bit platform is a pentium; AMD is worth only with a 939 socket (or with an Opteron platform)

If you analyze what Jmet's proposing, it's not really such a bad idea,
right now he's running a 100Mghz fsb cpu on a 166Mghz board, assuming
his memory is 333(166Mghz) he will get quite a performance boost
from upgrading his cpu to match the other components. The machine
I am using right now has an amd 2700/333 running at 2.16 Ghz.
He could double his speed easily. It's all about the core speed of the cpu.

Thank you all for the suggestions!

I found my brothers old computer in one of my closets. Its a Compaq computer but, the guts have been upgraded by my uncle, so its got some decent hardware in it. I am gonna try to do some "surgery transplanting" tonight to rob some of its parts. I am gonna try to find some model #'s to look up to see what all it has. I know when he had it, he played Quake 3 on it all the time with no problems. He got a Dell and just gave it to me. I know the motherboard is Compaq though, so I still need to get a motherboard.

Edit: Its a AMD Athlon Processor.

Edit Edit: It was a AMD Duron processor. It was slower than the current one. I will exchange them back tomorrow.

I guess I will just wait until I can build a PC that I like and keep that one for my daughter, as it gets on the internet and does word processing fine. Thank you all for the suggestions and informative advice!

Is there any way I could use it as a "Range Extender" for my wireless network? lol

"[Manual]: This allows user to set CPU host frequency manually. However,
because the CPU host frequency of this motherboard is determined by the
jumper-setting, you must set the FSB jumper adjustment according to your
AMD CPU before you use this “Manual” option as the FSB setting in BIOS
setup to perform over clocking. This is not recommended unless you
thoroughly know the feature. Wrong setup may cause problems during
              operation."

              evil idea

100 worked, 133 and 166 locked it up.

that answered my next question, set the jumpers for 100 and adjust the
fsb incrementally in bios, the interesting thing is those older cpu's weren't
multiplier locked, and something like a duron often ended up being 100-150
                  % overclocked on water.

AGP slot: 1 AGP slot, supports 1.5V, 8X/4X AGP card
right memory, right cpu, right video card, too bad about the lame hard drive

                    but you are networked?

I found a 20 GB hard drive in that Compaq I have, that I am going to add to it.

turning it into a decent access point will again cost you more than you would normally gain from it ^_~

This one is on the MBs list. Good company too:

for a little over 150$ you can get an amd 64 3200

I paid less that for my 2800 Barton & new MB with free 2 day FedX shipping last August, but was letting him know thew are still some CPUs available for his MB. His MB appears to be overcloker friendly too. As a format is fased out prices tend to increase for awhile and then drop back down after the new format takes off.

Overclockers New Zealand has posted a review on ASRock K7S41GX and Gigabyte 7VM400RZ. Both K7S41GX and K7VM400RZ are good candidates for office machines. In terms of gaming performance, that is where SiS741GX(or 741) has an over-whelming advantage over Via KM400 chipset Read more.

I'll probably go the 64 route when I decide to build another one, but now have 4 32s up and running.
