    monitor trouble

my 2 month old super-duper high-tech daytek 17" flat screen 89$ monitor the other day started doing something strange. a skinny, faint horizontal line starts at the top and sloooowly scrolls all the way to the bottom and starts over again at the top. takes about 20 -30 seconds per cycle. i noticed this just a few days ago and also now realized it's not present all the time.

i even tried to take a screenshot to confirm. nothing shows up on the photos--definetly the monitor. any other fix than a big hammer and a good toss in the bush? i have a spare 15" but it's so bloody small and i can't afford a new monitor right now. it's minor enough that i could even live with it if i had too, but obviously it would be better if it never happened.

P.S. it's doing it right now as i type this....

    appreciate any useful ideas/theories.

An IC is going bad Lt., get it repaired, sometimes it will go away once the monitor heats up, sometimes a small tweak by the technician also works.

is your monitor connected via DVI or is it an analog connection?

lines like your yours can be caused by a poor analog-digital conversion within the monitor should it not be connected via DVI

LT, experiment with your refresh rates(lower not too high)

agree with uncas and chewy (maybe try lower res too).

also remove/switch off other electrical devices eg speakers, phones, etc. --interference could be the cause. the problem you describe can happen when using dual crt monitors and placing them too close together

my old crappy crt didn't like my subwoofer

I don't think dvi will come into play with a 17 inch 89$ monitor.

first, ty everyone for your responses

@techreactor, can you explain this IC a bit? don't know what that is--i will google also.

              @UncasMS it's an analog connection.

@chewy, refresh rates? i tried before another screen resolution--same thing.

@anon, don't think interference could be doing it. same set up here.

the monitor was on sale "doorcrasher" so it's regular price was much higher than 89$. my last daytek 17" i threw out because every once in a while the screen turned pee-yellow--hard on the eyes. now...as i type this post, the problem isn't happenning

i'm not sure chewy. i asked the place who built this and they said it was integral with the motherboard. in display adapters i see "S3 graphics ProSavageDDR". is that it?

Well just verifying that the vid card couldn't push the monitor too hard,
I'd still leave the 16 bit color and lower resolution and 60Hrtz refresh rate
just to see if that's the problem and maybe extend the life a little.
Tech's probably right about the integrated circuit thing

ok so i'd pretty much have to take it in somewhere...well i guess i won't be doing anything. if i take it somewhere they'll charge me 50 bucks or more just to look at it. it's something i can live with for now. just thought it was worth asking in case it was fixable by me---but i didn't think so. ty to all of you who offered an opinion

                      it ain't doin it now

I meant that an electronic component inside (Integrated chip- IC) is failing or needs adjustment.

I faced a similar problem a few years ago and they replaced a small transistor in the monitor to correct it.

So taking your monitor to a service center should help!!!

ok. i'm going to make a few calls this week and see what some of these places are going to charge for diagnostics. thanx tech.

I had a similar problem tonight with my monitor, I changed the refresh rate from 65 Hertz to 85 Hertz and it fixed the problem.
