    understanding cpu

    Hello everyone,

I hope this question is not too esoteric, but as i am learning about cpu's, i have come across this phrase and i do not know what it means (this is all in an attempt to help choose between p4 prescott 630 and an appropriately priced amd cpu for my new video system!!)

ExtremeTech is the Web's top destination for news and analysis of emerging science and technology trends, and important software, hardware, and gadgets.

    paragraph starts with...
Typically, a modern processor will divide etc...
but the statement i don't understand is this last bit...
Because simpler stages cause less electron propagation delay, clock speeds can push higher.

    cheers

think speed of light(actually slightly less)
or how fast does an electron travel?

    and the choice is obvious

been there done that many times already

    no contesto

speed of light and electrons depends on the media

regarding whether to buy amd or intel, amd is the clear winner

I hope we aren't trying to analyze quantum jumps, because then I am in big trouble!

The big break thru was inventing a process to stretch cu wire thinner
to get down to the .09 level from the .13, believe it or no they used aluminum
before that, less brittle but slower speed for the electrons.
I got far enough in physics to measure the speed of light with a strobe and a lot of mirrors real far apart, deflection on a wall of a few cm. Quantum Mechanics my senior year, I made the first class, then realized I wasn't
geek enough for a "3 blackboard equation".

true in 2004, completely BS in 2005/2006

The advent of the amd64 and x2amd64 have completely overturned the apple cart, there's isn't even any more debate on it, the fat lady sang.

factor in gaming and you will understand why amd's market share is going hot guns and intel's scared

you've been looking at 2-3 year old benchmarks
