I have tested many writers, i like NEC, i have had one for many years and it has been superb, i tried a pioneer a while ago, i am the manager of a local computer shop and we have had many in. I found that the pioneers needed firmware updates to make them read some discs which read in older NEC drives. The writing performance was good but could be better. The latest lot i have in are LG and they seem much better than the Pioneer, they read discs well, do all kinds of discs and burn flawlessly. I also tried some Samsungs which were ok but had the same problems as the Pioneers. NEC and LG are both very good. I used to like the Liteon drives aswell but i have not tested any of their recent kit.

One of the best liteon is 1693. I have one, and it burn very well (and it's capable of scans ).

Latest drives with RAM support have some problems with RAM media; too immature. Maybe newer models will be better.

Another very good drive is benq 1640, but it don't support RAM media. The only benq drive supporting RAM media, DQ60, is a rebadged (Teac if I'm not wrong), and is a rather bad drive.

If you are interested, with windows XP you can also use RAM media as large "floppy discs" without any external driver installed, because XP manage natively RAM media. It format discs in FAT32 and you can drag&drop files on the disc.

The only issue is that the disc must be formatted, and this require almost 30 min

I know. I have done that before. It takes about an hour to do a whole disc on my current LG.

Does anyone know what the max rip speed is in DVD Decrypter for the NEC and LG.

My OEM Pioneer 109 was stuck at 5x and got fixed to acheive 12x using retail 109 firmware. It would be good to keep that speed. My old LG only did a max of about 8x.

Has anyone used Ridisc G04 with the NEC 4550. As I have around 150 of them, it is very important. I can get the 4550 with cheap shipping but it ends in an hour.

I was about to order the LG 4167 and now the NEC 4570 turns up. Anyone have one of these?

Also, does the LG or the NEC do automatic bitsetting with DL+R?

To bring this thread to a close. I have ordered a OEM LG 4167 in black from Amazon.co.uk. It was £27 including free delivery.
