Editing an MPG file

Say I have an MPEG file that I want to remix/edit the audio for. Now, if it were an AVI, I would open it in VDub and save a WAV, edit the WAV and use "WAV File" audio. If it were WMV, I would use Windows Media Stream Editor, get a WMA, edit that, and mix it back in with Stream Editor.

How do I do this for MPEG? VDub can import, but not save as MPG. Ulead is one option but that reencodes, whereas the other two methods use direct stream copy, which is better quality. Any freeware programs that will do that for MPEG files?

like UncasMS said, TMPGenc. you have full Mpeg-1 capabilities with your expired trial drf.

And I uninstalled TMPGEnc once the trial expired because I didn't know you can still use it, I will try to redownload it.

OK, I tried it, and got an MP2 audio file. Nero Wave Editor can't open the MP2. Now what?

what exactly do you want to do with the audio file? you could convert it to wav with bewsweet/light. (freeware)

Right, once I get it to WAV and edit it, then how do I put it back in the MPG file? Simple Multiplex won't take WAV, will it?
