    How Much Ram?

Well the sweet spot seems to have shifted to 512 megs sticks, sweet spot is the best price per meg!

Now you can't expect to use 4 sticks and dual channel be as fast!
I can barely see the benefit of a gig, when it's only 40% more than 512,
sure why not. Course I don't game, but just want the fastest computer I can build and afford. Don't think I will try 3 instances of photoshop, do a full encode and play any games at the same time.

    Dang thats cheap.
I made the mistake of getting a Dell 8200 a few years ago. Actually overall it has been a superb PC, but upgrading has become troublesome as I would like to upgrade RAM also. But seeing as the 8200 runs PC800 RDRam, I am looking at $300 or more for 2 more sticks of 256. I havent been able to find a decent price to justify the upgrade.
My wife does a lot of Adobe work, and myself now backing up my DVD's, it would be nice to have a few more megs behind it all.

I does amaze me how they charge so much more for the 1 or 2 gig sticks. I guess if you need more then a gig or 2 you are simply stuc paying for the larger ones. If you do not need that much ram go with the smaller ones for less money.

That was fast! So you went for the 512's or the gig's?

If I add more external burners and external Hard drives. let say 2 or 3 external burner and another hard drive. Do I need more Ram, or How do I keep my performent stay where it was and not get slower?

                Thanks

My birthday is July too, and I would also like some RAM.

                    Thank you.

What do you use to bench?? Just run prog's that you have timed from before?? Or run a separate tool??

I have a standard shrink bench, 70% transcode that usually takes 9-10 minutes, 2hr 20 min movie no da no aec

real world bench that doesn't take too long

Well lets see some results ! ! I would have to believe it should improve, maybe not dramatically, but a noticeably shorter run.

                          hmm, quick question.
What is the difference between transcode and encode ? ?

it's slower with a gig than 512, the new ram won't run as fast.

                            9:15 before 10:05 after

that's ok I need to set up a graphics computer to run adobe and corel
