Have you changed anything lately? Like Drivers

You also could be running out of availible system memory requiring Windows to poll data in/out of virtual memory

If im running too much and playing some mp3s and try to open lets say photoshop the songs will stutter unitl the CPU demand drops

I ve seen spy/malware, viruses, trojans cripple systems before

I'd like to see a screen shoot of your Windows Task manager and see what that is showing while you're having the problem

Take a screenshot after you notice the problem and leave everything open.

Well u're system isnt overloaded in that screenshot. Following Chewy's idear is good, but your HD would havta be chewed up pretty good to get a stutter.

I had a similiar prob with a MSI nForce 4 mobo since that mobo uses a Creative SB chip for the sound, and when he did a driver install using the nVidia nForce driver it replaced with the standard C-media driver causing the sound problems.

Please list your components for us

Also you might wanna try a HD tool like Western Digitals Diagnostic Tool (only if you have a WD drive) i think the other manufacturers have one tool, to check to see if you're having any HD issues

Again, are you sure that you have not installed any programs/driver/updates since the last time it worked, and now

                      Try running: msinfo32 [start -> run -> msinfo32]
Click on Tools (tab) select the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Let it run thru the check and on the bottom of the window click on the [Save All Information] button and post the text file, and
Click and check out the sound tabs [Sound 1], [Sound 2], and [Music] - (if there is a [Sound 2] tab).

                          Memory: 376MB RAM
                          Page File: 235MB used,
something's running in the background that's taking too much memory
you still have plenty left but whatever may be causing the conflict.

I am assuming you have a 256 and a 128 mem stick, currently in your system

Looking at an overview of spec's XP is going to want 256MBs to run efficently, leaving you with 128MBs and your Virtual memory left to handle everything. Plus it keeps a reserve of system memory handy to execute the virtual memory (swapping the info from HD to RAM and back and forth)

Running multiple apps is going to seriously choke your system

Here is a link to compatible memory for your system, buy as much as you can afford or desire. I suggest another 256 or 512. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&ATTR8=&ATTR9=

that pc should have no troubles playing mp3's-- ofcourse an upgrade is recommended, but definitely not necessary
