    My Temps

Just bought a new tower case, the antec slk3000b, see here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129152

also purchased a new case fan, 120mm "thermaltake smart case fan II". http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811999145 the case only came with one-- i moved it to the front to handle the hard disks. the thermaltake is now at the back.

i decided to try and push the pc to getting max temps for each component. note the thermaltake is damn noisy on full blast, so i turned the knob down to 50%. you could argue that "this isn't a fair test" then, but i'm quite confident i'll never turn it up full blast.

    pc specs

    AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
    2GB PC3200 Dual Channel RAM
    ASUS A8V-E SE Motherboard
    ATI X800XL 256MB PCI-E Graphics Card
    Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM 8Mb Cache
    Western Digital 200GB 7200RPM 8Mb Cache
    Aver 771 HDTV Capture Card
    LG GSA-4163B DVD +R/-R
    LG DVD ROM
    Antec 450W PSU
    CMV 19" LCD
    all simultaneously,

    - x264 encode, set to 2 threads
    - capturing a HD(14 mbps) and 2 SD (~6 and 1.5 mpbps) streams simultaneously- full ts to the second hard disk
    - extracting large rar file to & from first hard disk
    - playing 1080i mpeg2 while running transparent wb/avedesk/winamp skins; maxes out graphics card

after about 45 minutes of this, temps were:

    Motherboard: 36c

    CPU: 47c

    GPU: 47c

    GPU Ambient: 44c

    HDD1: 37c

    HDD2: 35c

Q: i know these temps are practical, but do you think i got what i paid for?

ps no aircon in the room, temp about ~30c

OLD temps, with old crappy case & crappy 80mm fan were:

    Motherboard: 43c

    CPU: 52c

    GPU: 50c

    GPU Ambient: 51c

    HDD1: 48c

    HDD2: 49c

keep in mind i never let the pc go that high normally; i had a large fan (for people, not hardware) pointed at it.

at decent noise level (25db) the thermaltake isnt that effective compared to other 120 fans with its ~35cfm airflow

      revoltec: 1200rpm, 24db, ~50cfm

i'd definitely go for the new enermax enlobal series in this price range:
      16-37db
      1000-2400rpm
      27-84cfm

        thanks uncas,

i did do some research before i purchased, but when i walked into the store it all went out the window-- the thermaltake was $5 with any case over $65. i originally wanted to go with a much better antec or cooler master, but the offer seemed good and i figured the thermaltake would do the job "OK"

it blows a LOT of air-- just need to turn it down a bit

anytime room/ambient temp hits 90F/30C then off comes the side and a small
fan gets pointed into the case

have you adjusted the cowling on the side vent to barely clear the cpu fan? and I would test with the front fan off and the 120 slightly higher rpm

looking at the case airflow I would suspect the front fan to be counterproductive, the gpu is still too hot

for $5 it of course is a very good choice

when i ordered six fans some weeks ago the new enermax series wasnt available yet so i ordered the 120x from revoltec and 80x from arctic cooling

the gpu is still too hot
            i wouldnt think so

            it is rather decent
the idle temp for an ATI X800XL is ~48°C in a normal system

hopefully that doesn't apply to us

                    a perfect fit

@uncas: guess my temps aren't too bad; at least for cpu & hard disks anyway. my mobo doesn't look to good though

unless you're asking uncas, upgrade what?

I have a similar case, a coolmax that came with 120 fan already in back,
the main intake of air is what's unique. Larger area in the sides down low.
With the right negative air pressure(main and powersupply fans all pulling air out), I seem to be getting superior cooling on the gpu and cpu. There isn't much air coming by the hard drives.

I bought it because it was cheap and on sale and used the powersupply in an older computer!

well I heated the room way up, pushing 24C/76F
let shrink use 100% of the cpu for 10 minutes

                            Temperatures:
                            Motherboard 25 °C (77 °F)
                            CPU 40 °C (104 °F)
                            GPU 35 °C (95 °F)
                            GPU Ambient 31 °C (88 °F)
                            DW CDW63G0-D00NF0A 39 °C (102 °F)
