DVD burner not playing DVD's

I'm new and I already posted in Junior members/newbies, so I'm not sure if I should be over here w/ my problem reiterated. But I need help!

I had my DVD burner installed, which also came w/ the Nero 6 suite. The CD's play and can be burned, however, the DVD's will not play at all. In fact, the DVD disc is not even recognized. I have been on the internet all day trying to figure out why... thus far, I have figured out (and I realize I could be wrong) that I need a decoder. Is this correct?

I went to another thread talking about codecs. I'm not sure what that means or if it has relevance to my problem.

So basically, any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Let's start from the beginning...

1. What are you trying to backup DVD wise? A home movie or store bought movie?
2. What is not recognized, the backed up disc or the original?
3. Name and serial # of your burner.

Ok, I'm trying to back-up a store-bought movie. Actually, I'm just trying to get the thing to recognize the original movie, since I can't even get to the burning part.

I have a memorex but I'm not sure what you mean by the serial #. Like I said, I'm very new.

Actually, that was one of the initials posts I read today. I did go into Infotool; I had a music cd in, which it recognized. I actually just burned that CD yesterday, it burned fine, played fine, and like I said, was recognized. I then put in a DVD (original, not backed up). It did not recognize the DVD; it showed that there wasn't even a disc in the drive.

what is the model of your burner?

This may sound stupid, but where would I find that? I'm looking at the box and it just says Memorex DVD dual format recorder, double layer. The manual that came w/ it for the software and w/ installation instructions also does not have a number. It has the write speeds listed, says internal E-IDe, but still no model #.

Ok, funny you should ask that. The first, original DVD I put in was a spanish DVD. I've been reading around and this made me think that perhaps the region may be off?

So I just now changed the DVD to Desperate Housewives Disc 1. When I put the CD in, I pulled up DVD Shrink, which I downloaded earlier today. It recognizes the disc in the drive now. It's currently analysing the CD as we speak. I have not tried to play it using Nero or Media Player.

So here I am waiting it out as it's analysing it...

Ok, so now it's playing on the little video frame in DVD shrink (yay!). Where do I go from here? B/c I do want to burn it.

Ok, I actually went and hit the back up tab on DVD shrink before you [Soup} posted. It's currently encoding. So should I be doing anything else while this is going on, will it mess up the process? And when you say decrypted, what do you mean by that?

You don't do anything else while Dvd Shrink is working. It is just safer that way. What program are you burning with? If you can read those threads but especially to be able to post a log. Here is another one for you, most of us have read it.
